Buffs Will Now Be Season Opener For Nebraska

BOULDER — Fresh from Friday night's season-opening win over Colorado State, Colorado's football coaches got up Saturday morning figuring they could catch a look at their next opponent later in the day, when Nebraska was scheduled to open the season at home against Akron.
That, in turn, would lead to some serious film study Sunday in preparation for Saturday's 1:30 p.m. game in Lincoln (ABC).
But there will be no film of the Nebraska-Akron game, as the Huskers' season opener was washed out by a vicious thunderstorm that swept through the Lincoln area Saturday night. After roughly a three-hour delay, the game was finally canceled.
Now, the Colorado game will be Nebraska's season opener. It means CU head coach Mike MacIntyre and his staff will continue to study Central Florida film, where new Nebraska coach Scott Frost coached the last two seasons, as well as NU film from last year in an effort to familiarize themselves with the Huskers' personnel.
They won't, however, see much film on NU's starting quarterback, as the Huskers are planning to start a true freshman, Adrian Martinez.
The CU staff does have some familiarity with Frost's work, as he was an assistant coach at Oregon from 2009 through the 2015 season, with the last three years as offensive coordinator under Mark Helfrich.
And, MacIntyre is very familiar with at least one member of the Cornhuskers' staff. NU offensive coordinator/wide receivers coach Troy Walters worked for MacIntyre for three years at Colorado as his recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach before leaving after the 2015 season to join Frost at Central Florida.
Frost, by the way, is also a relative rarity in CU history: he appeared at quarterback against the Buffs for two different teams.
While most folks familiar with the CU-Nebraska rivalry know he was the Huskers' starting quarterback in 1996 and '97, Frost also made an appearance against the Buffs as Stanford's backup quarterback in a 1993 Cardinal win over Colorado, running once and throwing one incomplete pass.
The starting quarterback for Stanford in that game? Steve Stenstrom, whose son Blake is a freshman quarterback with the Buffs.
