September 13, 2018 | Soccer
BOULDER.—The University of Colorado soccer team's Killer Bs, Jorian Baucom and Tatum Barton, accounted for all three goals in the Buffs' 3-0 win over Utah Valley at Prentup Field on Thursday. The win pushes Colorado's unbeaten streak to eight games, improving to 7-0-1 on the season.
Â
Colorado's unbeaten streak is the longest to open the season in program history. Â Â
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED: Colorado got the offensive chances going early on Thursday. Junior Stephanie Zuniga fired CU's first shot of the day off the crossbar in the 3rd minute. The Buffs outshot Utah Valley 6-0 in the first 23 minutes of the half.
Â
Baucom opened the scoring in the 25th minute. Barton centered the ball into Baucom at the top of the six-yard box. She whiffed on her first shot attempt, forcing Brooklyn Nielsen to play the loose ball. Baucom was able to punch the ball past Nielson while falling to the ground for the 1-0 lead.
Â
The Buffs kept the heat on and got back on the board in the 35th minute. Barton snuck free in the middle of the goal box and redshirt freshman Libby Geraghty slipped her the ball through traffic. Barton hit the lower right corner of the net, beating a charging Nielsen for her ninth goal of the season.
Â
Utah Valley recorded the first three shots in the second half, forcing Colorado's Scout Watson into action early on. Watson came in off the bench and made two saves. Jalen Tompkins started the game for the Buffs in net. She swapped out at the half with two saves of her own.
Â
Baucom added her second goal of the day in the 83rd minute. She took a pass from Emily Groark and beat the UVU defense down the field. This time she finessed the ball off her left foot, giving her her first two-goal game as a Buff.
Â
KEY STATISTICS: Colorado's backend kept the opposition scoreless for the sixth time this season. Utah Valley's shots were limited to eight on the day. The Buffs held the Wolverines to just four shots on net.

QUOTABLE:
Head Coach Danny Sanchez
On overall performance
"This was a team that was in the NCAA Tournament last year. I have a lot of respect for their coaching staff. They are well coached. We scored the first goal but they had two chances before that. It easily could have been 1-0 before that. It wasn't our best performance, but as a team, we gutted through it." Â Â
On playing with a younger lineup
"What we said to the team at halftime was, 'if you are going to make mistakes, make mistakes that don't let them score.' JJ [Jalen Tompkins] stood up big and made those saves after we broke down defensively a couple of times. Let's not split hairs. I thought we created a lot of chances. We scored three good goals, maybe could have had more. It is a learning experience for us, but no excuses. Everybody deals with injuries. Everybody has people that are performing. You just have to step up and play."
Junior Jorian Baucom
On team's offensive play
"I think you tell from the results and the way we are playing that Tatum and I are really clicking. A lot of players are really stepping up in place of Taylor [Kornieck]. Everyone has been proving themselves and we are getting the results that we need."
Â
On the depth of the roster
"The depth across our entire roster from offensive to defense and midfield to our goalkeepers, no matter what everyone has been proving themselves."
