Golfers In Eighth At Showdown In The Rockies

Poor Second Round Hurt CU's Chances

DRIGGS, Idaho — The University of Colorado men's golf team had an uncharacteristic poor showing in the afternoon round here Monday, as the Buffaloes ended the day in eighth place in the University of  Utah's Showdown in the Rockies.

CU was in fifth place after turning in an even-par morning round of 288, but ballooned to a 16-over 304 the second time around the 7,613-yard, par-72 Huntsman Springs Golf Course track to slide some 27 strokes back of the leader and host Utes.

Play was called because of darkness with two threesomes remaining on the course; they'll finish first thing ahead of the field on Tuesday.   Utah is leading its own meet with an 11-under score, followed by Oregon State (6-under) and Texas Tech (5-under), as all six golfers who didn't finish their last hole on Monday belong to those teams.

"We did a good job in the morning of getting in the house with a decent score despite not playing our best," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "The afternoon was a different story. Overall we had too many penalty shots and were out of position a lot.  We weren't able to manage it and the result was a poor round.  We are looking forward to going out and competing to move up the leaderboard tomorrow."

Junior Daniel O'Loughlin, fresh off his first collegiate win after emerged victorious in Air Force's Gene Miranda Invitation a week ago Sunday, is tied for 14th here through 36 holes.  He had seven birdies, five in the morning, en route to posting a 70-75—145 score.

Sophomore Cole Krantz also had five birdies in the first round and matched O'Loughlin's 2-under 70, but ran into trouble in round two despite four more birds; six bogeys and two doubles sent him to the unhappy side of par with a 6-over 78, as he ended the at 4-over 148, tied for 26th.  His nine birdies are tied for the seventh-most in the field.

Sophomore Trevor Olkowski recorded a pair of 75s for a 6-over 150, tying him for 34th.  He managed just three birdies Monday, but his 27 pars are tied for the most in the field.  He had a 20-hole stretch between the two rounds where he was 2-under, logging two birdies and 18 pars, but two double bogeys in a three-hole span would cost him in the end.

Junior Ross Macdonald opened with a 1-over 73 and made the turn in the afternoon even, but four bogeys and double gave him a 78, thus ending his day at 7-over 151, tying him for 39th.

Junior Victor Bjorlow scored a pair of 76s that has him tied for 42nd with an 8-over 152 total.   Even through three holes after making a birdie on No. 3, he had a nasty stretch with three double bogey in a five-hole span.  To his credit, he settled down and played his final 10 holes at 2-under par.

Freshman Kris Max, who is competing as an individual with his score not counting toward the CU team total, couldn't get much if anything going in the first round, posting a 13-over 85 score; however he gathered himself in and fashioned a 1-over 73 the second time around the Huntsman layout for a 14-over 158.  While that has him down the line tied for 54th in the 60-man field, he can take some solace in the fact that his 12-stroke improvement from the first round to the second tied for the 20th best in school history.

Colorado will be paired with Boise State and some individuals who are competing here but are not designated scorers for their teams; they are set to tee off on No. 10 beginning at 8 a.m. MDT.

RAM MASTERS INVITATIONAL IN FORT COLLINS: Two other Buffaloes are participating up the road in Colorado State's annual Ram Masters Invitational.  Freshman John Paterson turned in a 74-68—142 scorecard, 2-over par on the 7,218-yard, par-70 Fort Collins Country Club course.   That has him tied for 19th, nine strokes out of the lead, though of the 11 players competing as individuals, he posted the best score on Monday.   Junior Andre Leveque is tied for 61st after he turned in rounds of 73-75 for an 8-over 148.  The third and final round will commence Tuesday at 8 a.m., with players off both the No. 1 and 10 tees.
