Men's Golf Set To Host 9th Annual Simpson-CU Invitational

Colorado National GC To Play Host Monday & Tuesday
ERIE — The 9th Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational, honoring the late long-time coach of the program, will be played this Monday and Tuesday here at Colorado National Golf Club, the Buffaloes' home course located about 12 miles east of campus.
There are 14 teams entered in the field, including host Colorado, many of whom have played in this field previously: Cal-Baptist, CSU-Fullerton, CSU-Northridge, Gonzaga, Grand Canyon, Houston Baptist, Northern Colorado, Pacific, Southern Utah, Stephen F. Austin, UC-Riverside, Utah, Utah State, Utah Valley State and Wyoming. An additional 14 golfers will play as individuals, as their scores will not count toward their team totals: four more from CU, four from UCLA, three from Air Force, two from Colorado State and one from Utah.
"It looks like we'll have good weather, and the golf course is in really good shape," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We believe our team in ready to play in our home tournament, it's always fun to play and host it here at Colorado National so hopefully some of our fans can make it out to watch some good golf. We have to prepare, practice and execute to have a good week and I expect our guys to do it.
"This is a big week for us," Edwards added. "We have the Simpson on the front end of the week and come right back at play the (New Mexico) Tucker two days later, so it's going to be important to compete well the entire week."
Colorado's had a "Dr. Jeykll and Mr. Hyde" month so-to-speak, winning Air Force's Gene Miranda Invitational to open the fall slate, but came back with a disappointing eighth place finish in Utah's Showdown in the Rockies last week. Junior Daniel O'Loughlin won his first collegiate tournament when he was victorious in the Air Force meet, and is CU's leading in strokes average with a 71.3 figure.
Play begins Monday with 36 holes of continuous play (foursomes) with a shotgun format start at 8:15 a.m. (MDT), followed by the final 18 holes on Tuesday in a staggered shotgun format (the top four teams will play in five tee times off No. 1 beginning at 7:55 a.m.; rest in a shotgun at 8:15). Colorado National's championship layout is a 7,676-yard, par-72 configuration, and the greens feature bent grass.
Mark Simpson served as Colorado's head coach for 29 years (1977-2005), until he passed away at the age of 55 on Dec. 5, 2005; he was inducted earlier that year into the GCAA Hall of Fame. Edwards created this tournament in 2010 in his honor.
