Buffs Among National Leaders

Colorado impresses in early season

BOULDER – The unbeaten University of Colorado soccer team jumped into the top-25 of the TopDrawerSoccer.com rankings this week. The Buffs (4-0-1) open the week as the No. 23 team in the poll.

CU is also receiving votes this week in the United Soccer Coaches rankings. Stanford comes in at No. 1 in both polls.Ā 

Colorado has seen early success on both sides of the field this season. The Buffs' offense ranks third in the NCAA with 10.8 points per game and is the eighth-ranked scoring offense in the country with 3.20 goals per game. CU leads the Pac-12 with 16 goals scored this season, good for 15th in the NCAA. The Buffs rank second in the NCAA in total assists (22) and assists per game (4.40). As a team, the Buffs are fifth in the nation with 54 total points.Ā 

Not to be outdone, the defense had held opponents to just one goal on the season. Colorado's backend leads the Pac-12 and sits eighth in the NCAA with a .191 goals against average. The duo of Jalen Tompkins and Scout Watson have combined for a .950 save percentage, good for fifth in the country. The team has played to four shutouts in its five games, ranking ninth in the country with a .800 shutout percentage.

The Buffs are also scattered across the individual rankings. Junior Taylor Kornieck ranks second in both total assists (6) and assists per game (1.2). The midfielder is also 24th in the country in total points (10) and points per game (2.0). Junior Tatum Barton has come on strong this season. She is currently third in the nation with six goals this season. Her 13 points are seventh in the NCAA this season and the most in the Pac-12. Freshman Emily GroarkĀ has stepped up the season, ranking 14thĀ in the country with four assists.Ā 

In net, Tompkins ranks second in the conference and 17th in the NCAA with a 0.917 save percentage.Ā 

The Buffs hit the road for the first out-of-state road trip of the season. Colorado will be at Marquette on Thursday (6 p.m. MT) and Michigan State on Sunday (10 a.m. MT). Ā Ā
