Buffs Have Just One Senior On Their Roster

BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team will open its 99th season of intercollegiate competition Friday just down Interstate 25 in the 50th Annual Gene Miranda Air Force Falcon Invitational.

The 54-hole tournament will be played over three days on the USAFA's Eisenhower Blue course, a par-72 layout that spans some 7,511 yards.   Play features 18 holes each on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, with 7:30 a.m. start times for the first two rounds and a 7:15 start on Sunday.

Sixteen schools will be competing in the event; in addition to CU and host Air Force, Abilene Christian, Drake, Missouri State, New Mexico State, Northern Colorado, Northern Iowa, SIU-Edwardsville, Southern Utah, Texas State, UC Davis, Utah State, Utah Valley State, Weber State and the meet's defending champion, Wyoming, are entered in the field.

This will be the 36th time the Buffaloes are competing in this tournament, which was known as the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate prior to 1977.  Colorado has won the meet six times, last doing so in 2012, along with five runner-up finishes and five third-place efforts, including last year (the Buffs were eight strokes out of the lead).

Colorado head coach Roy Edwards is beginning his 13th season as coach of the Buffaloes.  The team is coming off two memorable seasons, reaching as high as No. 18 in the national rankings in 2016-17, and last spring pushing eventual champion USC to the brink in finishing second at the Pac-12 Conference Championships.

Colorado returns six lettermen from the '17-18 team, while four graduated, seniors Yannik Paul, who set 23 school records, Spencer Painton, John Souza and Kade Crossland.

This year's edition of the Buffaloes is one of the youngest in recent memory, as Wilson Belk is the lone senior on the 10-man squad.  There are four juniors, Daniel O'Loughlin who was second on the team in stroke average last year with a 71.54 mark, Ross Macdonald, who tied for second in the Pac-12 Championships, Victor Bjorlow and South Florida transfer Andre Leveque.  Two sophomores also return Cole Krantz and Trevor Olkowski.

Newcomers in addition to Leveque include three freshmen, Adam Matteson (from Scripps Ranch in San Diego). And two international students, Kris Max (Denmark) and John Paterson (Scotland).

"As always at this time of year, everyone is excited to get started," Edwards said.  "Despite losing four seniors we have some guys returning who have played at very high levels and some young players ready to go.  This has been a great group who has been learning and getting better already even though we have just started the season.  We expect to be good again.  If we keep working hard, grow our confidence, and continuously learn then this will be a team that really improves as the year goes on."

For the inaugural tournament of the year, Edwards will have O'Loughlin, Macdonald, Olkowski, Bjorlow and Paterson play the 1-through-5 positions to account for team scoring, while Belk, Krantz and Max will play as individuals.
