CU Golfers In Second, One Stroke Back At Air Force Invitational

September 08, 2018 | Men's Golf

USAFA, Colo. — The University of Colorado men's golf team shot a 5-under par team score of 283 to remain in second place in the 50th annual Gene Miranda-Air Force Falcon Invitational.

After going 3-under in the first round, the Buffs improved by two strokes and sit at 8-under par 568 through 36 holes.  Wyoming is in the lead, one-stroke ahead of the Buffs at 9-under 567 after shooting an 8-under 280 in the second round.  New Mexico State sits in third at 5-under par 571 with Northern Colorado (1-under 575) and host Air Force (even par 576) rounding out the top five.

Eight Buffs are competing here, three as individuals, and seven of the eight posted scores between 67 and 75 on the 7,511-yard, par-72 Eisenhower Blue Golf Course layout.  Five of the eight Buffs, including four of the five scoring for the team, all birdied the Par 5 No. 9 to end the day on a strong note.

Sophomore Trevor Olkowski posted his second-lowest score as a collegian, turning in a bogey-free round of 5-under 67; that has him third individually through two rounds with a 6-under 138 total.  In recording his third college round without a bogey, he had two birdies on the front nine and three on the back, with the remainder of his holes being 13 pars.

Junior Daniel O'Loughlin posted his second straight score of 2-under par 70 to sit in sixth place individually at 4-under par 140.  Teeing off on No. 10, he started his day with three birdies in four holes and after playing the next 13 holes at 1-over, he birdied his last hole of the day, No. 9, to record his 70.

Junior Ross Macdonald also went under par Saturday with a 1-under 71 and he sits tied for 22nd at 1-over par 145 through 36 holes.  He had a bit of a roller coaster round with six biries, five bogeys and seven pars to finish one under.

Junior Victor Bjorlow and freshman John Paterson each recorded 3-over par 75s in the second round.  Bjorlow sits tied for 30th at 2-over par 146 while Paterson sits tied for 48th at 4-over par 147.

Three Buffs are participating as individuals here, meaning their scores don't count to the CU team total.  Sophomore Cole Krantz is on pace to have his finest collegiate finish in a major tournament, as he fired a second straight 1-under 71 for a 2-under 142 total; that has him tied for 10th. He had five birdies and nine pars against four bogeys.

Senior Wilson Belk scored a second consecutive 1-over 73 (three birdies, 12 pars), as he is tied for 30th with a 2-over 146, while freshman Kris Max rounded out the Buff eight-man contingent here with, struggling to an 8-over 80, which has him at 11-over 155, tying him for 81st.

"We got off to a really good start today then struggled a bit during the middle of the round," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "We had a good finish on 8 and 9 to get it in the house at 283.  It was a really nice round from Trevor Olkowski.  Ross and Daniel were solid as were Cole and Wilson from the individual side.  I was really impressed with how well we competed as a group.  Along with being patient it is going to be very important for us to continually focus on that all season.  We did a good job with that today.  Tomorrow we need to focus on a executing our plan, being patient, and believing in ourselves."

The third and final round will commence at 7:15 a.m. Sunday.
