Buffs and CUPD Take to the Lanes

BOULDER—The University of Colorado women's basketball team spent Tuesday afternoon knocking down pins and throwing strikes with the University of Colorado police department.

The Buffs and CUPD met at the Connection bowling alley inside the University Memorial Center to familiarize with each other outside of their respective realms.

The afternoon was an extension of CUPD's previous work within the CU athletic department, most notably with the CU football team. The Buffs football team has worked with the CUPD in the community and participated in rapid emergency training in past engagements.

"These kinds of events have been a pretty big success with football and we wanted to build that same relationship with women's basketball," CUPD Sgt. John Zizz explained. "As soon as [CU Director of Basketball Operations] Jill [Mahoney] heard that we were doing Training Day with the Buffs, she immediately got in contact with me."

The two parties mixed together and spent the better half of two hours getting to know each other out of their respective uniforms.

"I think it was a really good opportunity," junior Quinessa Caylao-Do commented. "I don't think a lot of people get to build a relationship with the police officers. I think they just see them pulling someone over and you never get to meet their personalities."

Caylao-Do's sentiments were echoed by Sgt. Zizz:

"I think it is really important. The police officers are getting an understanding and appreciation of the student-athlete and building a relationship there. Also, the student-athlete understanding that while we do have a job in law enforcement, we are also just to be a support and resource in our community. They get to see us in an element when we are not in a uniform and where we are not carrying a gun. It is really just relationship building."

The bowling provided a break for the Buffs. Colorado battled in two close contests against Arizona and Arizona State this past weekend but came up short in both. The Buffs were back on the court Tuesday morning, preparing for their first conference road trip. CU will be at Washington (Friday) and Washington State (Sunday).
