O'Loughlin Ties For Second To Cap Solid Fall
BOULDER — The University of Colorado men's golf team wrapped up the fall portion of the 2019-20 schedule here Monday, as eight Buffaloes competed as individuals in the inaugural Les Fowler-CU Invitational.
The event featured 33 individuals from five Colorado universities and was not a team competition.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin recorded the low round of the day with a 4-under par 66 in the morning, one of just two subpar rounds total of the 66 played Monday. He had a bumpier ride in the afternoon, firing a 76 for a 2-over 142 total, as he would tie for second, one stroke back of Denver's Cal McCoy.
O'Loughlin had a two-stroke leader over McCoy heading into the final nine holes; he bogeyed 10 while McCoy scored par to pull to within one. It remained that way until No. 16, when O'Loughlin made double bogey on the par-4 with McCoy making a 4 to swap positions in the standings. The two parred out giving McCoy the win.
CU's leader in stroke average for the fall with a 70.4 average, O'Loughlin had a team-high seven birdies with 21 pars and seven bogeys, along with that unfortunate double.
The golf course played tough today, it was firm and fast," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The hole locations were only of medium difficulty, but when BCC gets forms and fast and throw in some wind, it gets difficult really fast. It was a great test for the field."
"It was a really good round from Daniel in the morning," Edwards added. "He didn't play his best in the afternoon so he didn't get the win. He had a really good fall and he keeps building on his first two years here. With a great offseason he can turn this into a special year."
Redshirt freshman Adam Matteson recorded CU's other top 10 finish, as he tied for eighth with a 72-75—147 scorecard. He had six birdies Monday, and would have cracked the top five had he not had to endure a double bogey in each round.
This was the final competition for the Buffaloes this fall, who will resume tournament play in February in the Amer Ari Invitational on Hawaii's Big Island.
"As a team, the fall was a mixed bag," Edwards said. "We had two really good wins and one really poor tournament. There just wasn't the consistency we needed to be as good as we can. There's a lot of talent on this team, and if we dedicate ourselves in the offseason we have a chance to be really good later in the spring."
NOTES: Sophomore Kristoffer Max had the team's lone eagle, as he scored it on the par-4 No. 1 hole … the team's 72.63 stroke average is the second-lowest in school history; the '17-18 Buffaloes checked in at 72.51 for the fall … O'Loughlin added to his school record of consecutive rounds under 80, as he has played 89 at Colorado as a Buffalo after transferring to CU following his freshman year at McNeese State (high has been 78).
