Buffs Suffer Sweep to Cougs

October 24, 2019 | Volleyball

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team couldn't overcome the blocking presence of No.24-ranked Washington State Thursday evening as the Cougars powered to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 25-16) sweep of the Buffaloes in Boulder.

Colorado (8-11, 0-9 Pac-12) struggled all evening to land the ball on Washington State's (16-4, 6-3 Pac-12) side of the court. The team committed 22 attack errors and hit .060 that included a -.036 third set performance. WSU forced down 13 of those attack errors by blocks and hit .243 to put CU away.

Freshman Sterling Parker led the Buffs with eight kills and a .115 hitting percentage. Senior Justine Spann had an off night with six kills and six errors for a .000 hitting percentage. The two combined for half of CU's swings as Jill Schneggenburger took 17 with a -.118 hitting percentage. Elissa Alcantara led the team with a .333 hitting percentage but only had three kills.

The brightest spot for the Buffaloes was the serving game where Spann led the team with three aces and Schneggenburger added another in her return to the court after missing two matches in the Bay Area. Senior Rachel Whipple had eight digs in the back row while Jenna Ewert and Meegan Hart led the team with four blocks each.

Washington State had a pair of hitters put down 11 kills, but the team's true strength came from middle Jocelyn Urias who had nine kills for a .471 hitting percentage. Magda Jehlarova led the team with seven blocks.

The Buffaloes have two days at home to recuperate before hosting No.9 Washington Sunday at 1 p.m. (MDT) Colorado has won three of the last four matchups with the Huskies in Boulder.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Buffs took an early three-point lead to start the first set before the Cougars went on a 4-2 run to tie it up at five apiece. Colorado trailed by just one at 10-9 while hitting .263 to the Cougars .333. Colorado challenged a tipped ball unsuccessfully that gave the Cougs a 15-12 lead while Alcantara led the Buffs hitting 3-for-3 into the media timeout down three. Out of the break, WSU extended on a 5-0 run that gave them a 17-12 lead. A Colorado timeout was forced after WSU went up five to lead CU 21-16, with the Buffs being held to a hitting percentage of .086 compared to the Cougars .242. Colorado called their second timeout after the Cougs scored two consecutively and won the set two plays later.

The Cougars went on an early 3-0 run that was cut off by a Parker kill to start the second set. Washington State and Colorado went back-and-forth between points until the Cougs pull together another 3-0 run with WSU hitting .260 to CU's .075. Tusa and Timmer led Washington State with six kills each and Parker fronted CU with five kills. The Cougs developed a third 3-0 run that gave them a 17-10 lead. Colorado responded with a four-point run of their own that narrowed their deficit to three and forced a Washington State timeout. The Buffs extended their run to six which was shut down by a Timmer kill and her eighth of the night. Colorado tied it up at 18 apiece while hitting .091. WSU and CU battled back-and-forth to a 21 all tie. Washington State put together another three-point run making it their fourth of the set to give them set point at 24-21. Colorado fended off two set points to make it 24-23 before Tusa finished it off with her ninth kill of the match. The Buffs finished the set hitting .111 while the Cougs hit .205.

The Cougs began the third set with a four-point run. CU's Parker gathered her seventh kill of the night to close in on Washington State's lead at 5-2. Back-to-back blocks from WSU forced a Colorado timeout as the Cougars led 7-2. WSU went on a 5-2 run to take a 12-4 lead as CU called their second timeout. Washington State led CU with a .233 to .012 hitting percentage through the third set. The Cougars tacked on a 6-3 run that gave them a 17-8 lead. Colorado was led by Parker's eight kills and .115 hitting percentage and Washington State's Timmer collected 11 kills and hit .148 thus far. A Washington State block set up match point for the Cougars and was won with another block two points later.

QUOTES
Head Coach Jesse Mahoney
On The Match
That was a frustrating match. Washington State played really well with low errors. We were very high in errors and you can't win matches when you are giving away points like we did in that match.

On Hitting Into Blocks and Passing
Washington State does a nice job blocking. We didn't make very good choices attacking wise and our passing degraded as the match went on. We struggled to attack against solo blocks and saw a lot of double blocks because of it.
