Nayar Finishes as Regional Runner-Up

LAS VEGAS – The University of Colorado women's tennis closed out the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mountain Regional Championship Sunday morning in Vegas with sophomore Sara Nayar finishing as the regional runner-up.

Nayar took on the top-seeded Chiara Tomasetti of Northern Arizona Sunday morning in a matchup of ranked individuals. Tomasetti's preseason ranked was No.71 by the ITA while Nayar was No.65. The two matched up with Tomasetti pushing out quickly with a 6-2 first set victory. With 10 matches already under her belt between doubles and singles, Nayar couldn't push through the second set and fell 6-1.

"Overall this was a good week for the program," said Head Coach Danielle Steinberg. "In my book Colorado needs to play for the regional championship every year, and we made a big step towards that goal this year. This was a good tournament for Sara in terms of maturity and mental growth. In the span of a week's tournament, there will be a lot of ups and downs. We will almost never play our best tennis every day, and we need to learn how to figure out ways to battle and win matches regardless of how well we play- and I think Sara did that very well this week. We came up short today but that doesn't take away the progress we made over the week."

Colorado had an extraordinary week with an 11-9 team record in singles matches and 4-2 in doubles. The team was 10-4 in main bracket singles matches that included Nayar's 5-1 run to the second place finish.

After the long week in Las Vegas the team will return to Boulder with 10 days to rest and recover before they fly back out to compete in the UNLV Rebel Invitational to finish the fall season.
