Six Buffs in the top 20 individually
ERIE — The University of Colorado men's golf team, looking to win or share the title in its own tournament for the seventh straight year, is in position to do just that as the Buffaloes will take the lead into the final round Tuesday of the 10th Annual Mark Simpson-Colorado Invitational.
The Buffaloes posted a 20-under par team score of 556, scoring back-to-back subpar rounds for the first time this season (with a season-best 12-under 276 in the morning round). Utah State finished the day in second place, four strokes back at 560, with Grand Canyon in the mix, five off the pace with a 561 total. Wyoming (562) and CSU-Fullerton (563) round out the top five, with just 10 strokes separating the top seven teams overall.
Colorado led after the first round, with its 276 the best 18-hole score for either round; Grand Canyon was in second two back heading into the afternoon. The 12-under effort was one stroke off the single round best for the event, but the Buffs did match the 36-hole best – 20-under – that they recorded back in 2014.
The Buffs have six of their eight individuals competing in the top 20, including four of the five designated scorers.
Leading the way is senior Daniel O'Loughlin, who is tied for fourth, three off the lead, after a 69-67—136 performance, or 10-under par on the 7,703-yard, par-72 Colorado National Golf Club course layout. He had 11 birdies and 22 pars with just three bogeys Monday, as he played the par-5s second best in the field (5-under) and the par-4's the third best (also 5-under); his 11 birdies tied for sixth in the 72-man field.
Junior Cole Krantz sliced three strokes off his previous collegiate single-round best, opening play with a 6-under 66; he came back with an afternoon 73 for a 5-under 139 score (his 36-hole best) and stands tied for eighth. He worked to 7-unde early in his second round but would score three bogeys before ending the day with a bird on his final hole. His seven birdies in round one was a CU high for the day and matched the team-best for the fall season.
Sophomore John Paterson is in 18th place with a 3-under 141 score, as he opened with a 69 in the morning. He had two eagles Monday, the only player in the field to have more than one despite 16 total, an unusually high figure. He had four birdies and tied for team-high with 25 pars.
Senior Ross Macdonald is tied for 19th, also under par with a 2-under 142; he recorded nine birdies and 23 pars but was headed toward a morning finish in the 60s until he triple-bogeyed his next to last hole after driving his tee shot into the water. To his credit, his bounced back with a par to close the round and then shot a 70 the second time around the CNGC track.
Redshirt frosh Adam Matteson hung around par for most of the day, as he ended tied for 28th with a 73-71—144 even-par total. He was either 1-under, even or 1-over after 28 of his 36 holes, and finished the day with seven birdies and 23 pars.
Senior Andre Leveque is pacing the three Buffs playing as individuals, meaning their scores don't count toward the CU team total. He turned in a pair of 70s, with his 140 score tying him for 12th. He had 11 birdies and 19 pars for his day and also played the par-5's at 5-under to match O'Loughlin.
Sophomore Kristoffer Max fashioned a 70-72—142 scorecard, tying him for 19th; he matched Paterson's team-best with 25 pars, and had an eagle and five birdies with just five bogeys. Senior Victor Bjorlow rounded out the CU contingent with a 73-75—148 effort, which has him tied for 48th. He also had an eagle, but was undone to a degree with three double bogeys.
"I thought as a group we did a really nice job of competing," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "The guys were in control all day and I was generally impressed with how they handled their business and their course management. What held us back from posting a really low score was that we didn't make a ton of putts. But almost everybody had several really good moments.
"I told the guys to go through the golf course with their strategy tonight before tomorrow's round," he added. "What they need to do to keep playing well and to be smart. When it's this close, you never know what shot could be the one to come down as the one that matters."
Nebraska-Omaha's Witchayapat leads an equally tight race for medalist honors, as he is in at 11-under 133 through 36 holes after scoring an eagle and 12 birdies with just two bogeys Monday. Ten players are within six strokes of him entering the final 18 holes.
The third and final round will commence at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday morning, an hour later than originally scheduled as play was delayed that long Monday due to heavy frost on the course. Colorado will be paired with Utah State and Grand Canyon with all players going off the No. 1 tee; the remainder of the field will play in a shotgun format beginning at 9:10.
NOTES: The tournament is named for the late Mark Simpson, who coached the Buffs for 29 seasons (1977 until his death in 2005) … Utah Valley's Jake Bryson scored the first hole-in-one in the history of the tournament, as he aced the 209-yard, par-3 9th hole which was playing to just 99 yards in the first round … The average score for 144 rounds Monday was 72.72 (a bit higher for the second round at 73.04) … The Buffs lead the field in par-4 (9-under par) and par-5 (16-under) scoring while being tied for third on the par-3s (7-over) … CU is also second in total birdies by its designated scorers (40) and third in pars (116) O'Loughlin now has 26 rounds in the 60s and 40 subpar scores in his two-plus year CU career.
