November 19, 2019 | Women's Golf

BOULDER — The University of Colorado women's golf coach Anne Kelly has announced the signing of Lauren Gooding, Ellie Gower and three-time Colorado High School Athletic Association Player of the Year Hailey Schalk to National Letters of Intent.

Schalk and Gooding will join this team in the fall of 2020, while Gower will enroll in classes this coming January and will start practicing with the team.

Bios for each athlete are below.

KELLY ON SCHALK: "We are so thrilled to have Hailey join our team. I've had the pleasure watching her grow up, because her dad, Matt Schalk, is the Director of Golf at our home course, Colorado National Golf Club. Now, after having her on our radar for so long, to finally officially call her a Buff is very exciting. I know Hailey had options when it came to making her choice about college and college golf –we are happy and proud that she decided to stay in state and chose the University of Colorado. She brings with her a tremendous work ethic, school and team pride."

"Hailey has had a lot of success here in Colorado and nationally, but I think the best of her game is yet to come. We look forward to having Hailey join our team next fall and competing for the Buffs!"

A senior at Holy Family High School, Hailey Schalk has won the first three CHSAA championships she competed in and looks to become the first athlete to win the state championship four times. As a freshman at state, she shot a 7-under 65, which was the lowest score ever for a female at state.

She has seen a lot of success in her young career. In 2017, she won the AJGA Hale Irwin Junior Championships with a scorecard of 70–73–69—212. Schalk placed second at the Nike Junior Invitational at Vanderbilt and was fifth at the Arizona Silverbelle. She was named the Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado Player of the Year once, the Rocky Mountain Junior Golf Tour Player of the Year twice and the CHSAA High School and Boulder County Preps Player of the Year three times.

A Sportswomen of Colorado high school golf honoree, she was named the 2017 Junior Golf Alliance of Colorado Player of the Year and was a 2018 Colorado Golf Hall of Fame Future Famer.

Schalk's home course is the same as the Buffs, Colorado National Golf Course. Her best round there was a 9-under 63.

She was highly recruited by schools in the SEC, Pac-12, ACC, Big Ten and Mountain West, but chose Colorado because of the coaches and the opportunity to represent her home state.

KELLY ON GOODING: "Lauren is an up and coming player who has a tremendous amount of untapped talent and potential.  She has a fantastic golf swing and has continually improved her game.  This past summer, Lauren had some good performances both in her home country and internationally. She is the type of player that has had good success in our program.  We feel when she has the time and opportunity to dedicate herself to college and collegiate golf she will really blossom and be a terrific player for the Buffs. We are looking forward to adding Lauren to our 2020 fall freshman class."

Lauren Gooding, a native of London, England, has played several sports at Wellington College. She has been a member of the golf first team for five years, in addition to competing in tennis, rackets and hockey. Her top amateur performances include a win at the London Ladies Foursomes, which was six rounds of match-play (2019), a second-place finish at Junior Europeans (2018), a second-place finish at the Surrey County Championship (2019), a seventh-place finish at the Henry Cooper Masters (2019) and a 10th-place finish at the English Girls U16 (2017). Her stroke average is 73.5 and she has been ranked as high as 126th in the 2019 European Girls Rankings.

Roehampton Club is her home course and her best score there is a 4-under 68. Her best career round was a 3-under 69 at Blackmoor Golf Club in Hampshire.

Denver, UCLA and FIU were also interested in Gooding. She chose Colorado because of the excellent golf program and facilities and was impressed by the business school.  Gooding said, "I got a great feeling on campus when I visited and loved it!"

KELLY ON GOWER: "I was fortunate enough to watch Ellie play this summer and was very impressed with her game, attitude and character. Initially, we were hoping to add Ellie to our 2020 fall class, but then we learned that she had completed her high school education. After discussing the possibilities, Ellie, her parents and I concluded coming to CU spring semester of 2020 would be a good idea."

"Ellie is a highly dedicated golfer and brings with her tremendous golf experience competing at high levels. We look forward to what Ellie can bring to our program with the accomplishments she already has to her credit.  She has competed against some of the best players in the world already as well as being a member of England's national junior team.  We are hopeful Ellie can have an immediate impact on the success of our team this spring."

Ellie Gower currently resides in Perth, Scotland, but was born in London, England, and lived in France where she attended Notre Dame de Monbahus. Earlier in 2019, she played on the European Girls Team Championship team and the R&A Girls Home International team. Gower has had a successful 2019 schedule. She won the Cyprus Open and was third at the Scottish Girls Championships. Gower also placed fifth at the Ladies Irish Open and was top 10 at the German Girls Championships. .In 2018 she won the English U16s North Championship shooting a 14-under. Gower was ranked the No. 1 player in France in 2017.

She lists her home course as Gleneagles where her best score is 6-under and her best round was a 5-under.

Gower's father, Brian Gower, is a PGA Professional. Gower was a caddie for Ellie Givens on the Lacoste Ladies Open de France from 2015-17. She chose Colorado over FAU, AU and Fresno State because of its location, facilities and coaches.
