Tompkins And Klecker Named CU Athletes Of The Week, Presented By Arrow

November 29, 2019 | Cross Country, General, Soccer

BOULDER - Soccer's Jalen Tompkins cross country's Joe Klecker were named CU Athletes of the Week, presented by Arrow, for the week of  Nov. 18-24.

Tompkins, a senior from Phoenix, Ariz., put on a show for the Colorado soccer team. She made nine saves for Colorado in the second round of the NCAA Tournament against top-seeded North Carolina. The senior captain kept Colorado within striking distance, making four saves in the first half, keeping the game scoreless at halftime. She allowed one goal in the early portion of the second half but continued to make save after save allowing Colorado to push for the equalizer. Tompkins finishes her career as CU's all-time career leader in wins and saves.

Klecker, a senior from Minnetonka, Minn.,  raced to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Ind. His finish is the highest for a University of Colorado Buffalo at that meet since Dathan Ritzenhein's national championship in 2003. Klecker ran an excellent 10-kilometer race in horrible conditions, finishing in 30:37.1. The course was extremely muddy from rain and snow and temperatures reached as low as the 30s. The senior standout managed the conditions and was less than five seconds behind the winner, Iowa State's Edwin Kurgat (30:32.7). His finish helped the Buffs to a third-place team finish. With his performance, he is a three-time cross country All-American for the Buffs.

ALSO NOMINATED:

Football - Nate Landman

In CU's 20-14 win over Washington that ended a nine-game losing streak to the Huskies, he had a team-high 10 tackles (seven solo, one for a loss including a third down stop), two passes broken up and a key interception that ended an early UW scoring threat at the CU10.
He led a defense that limited a CU opponent to a season-low 238  yards, also a season-worst on offense for Washington.

Women's Cross Country - Sage Hurta

Sage Hurta led the Colorado women at the NCAA Cross Country Championships, November 23, in Terre Haute, Ind. with a 38th place finish to record her fourth All-America honor in cross country. She is just the second Buff to ever earn the honor four times in cross country, joining Olympian ShayalaKipp (2010-13). Hurta finished the 6-kilometer race in 20:44.3 and led the Buffaloes to a 10th-place team finish.
