Colorado Sweeps Sun Devils
November 03, 2019 | Volleyball
BOULDER – The Colorado Buffaloes women's volleyball team put together its second consecutive win in a 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-23) sweep against Arizona State Sunday afternoon in Boulder.
Colorado (10-12, 2-10 Pac-12) pulls into a tied for 11th in the Pac-12 and earn their first sweep against ASU (13-10, 5-7 Pac-12) after dominating the floor with a .287 team hitting percentage and holding the Sun Devils to .147 hitting.
The largest contributor to the Buffs' success today was middle Meegan Hart who put down 11 kills without hitting an error for a .688 hitting percentage. The redshirt sophomore also added a pair of aces and helped with a block assist. She was joined by Justine Spann and Elissa Alcantara who each had seven kills, along with Sterling Parker's six.
Setter Jenna Ewert had another huge night with a double-double to lead the team in both assists and digs. Ewert dished out 26 assists, put up a dozen digs and had five kills without an error for a .556 hitting percentage.
On the defensive side, Danielle Price led all players with four blocks and added a pair of kills on two swings for a perfect hitting percentage. Rachel Whipple tied Ewert with a dozen digs and added an ace.
The Sun Devils struggled to find offense against the Buffs' block, working three different setters out in their 6-2 system and even running a rally without a setter in all together. The team found success after bringing in Noa Miller in the second set and starting her the third. The sophomore had 11 assists. Senior outside Ivana Jeremic had eight kills for a .316 hitting percentage while Iman Isanovic had nine kills for a .278 hitting percentage. ASU hurt themselves with 20 attack errors and nine service errors compared to CU's 11 and four, respectfully.
With the wins, the Buffs look to carry the momentum on the road for four-straight Pac-12 matches. Colorado found themselves in a similar situation last season with four Pac-12 road matches and needing to win three of them to qualify for the tournament. This year the team has another four home matches on the back of that and is aiming to get to a .500 winning percentage as they sit two matches back at the moment. On The Match
I thought that it was a really fun match to be a part of for our players, the first two sets especially. We played with a lot of energy, we served and passed exceptionally well, and Jenna moved the ball around. It was really fun volleyball to watch. I think that Arizona State is a great team and they're having a great season, they are going to be a tournament team. The third set was a little bit more of a dog fight, and we knew that going in. We knew that they were going to play hard and we had to keep our focus. We lost a little in the middle of it, but we came back at the end and were able to close it out. It was a great weekend, with a weekend sweep, and hopefully it is something that we can build on.
On What The Weekend Sweep Mean For The Rest Of The Season
No one likes to be winless, so it was nice to get the monkey off our back there. It is hard to feel like we are playing well when we aren't getting the results, even though I think that we have done some really good stuff. It is nice to get the result and hopefully that translates into us taking that on the road with us. At the end, we talked about how we have a really high level in us and we need to achieve that high level consistently over time. If we can do that then we can play with anybody.
Sophomore Jenna Ewert
On What This Weekend Sweep Means
I think it's a really good ego booster. You know, we were 0-10 so we weren't that confident and I think something just flipped this week. We had a meeting, we're halfway through the Pac-12. We looked at the stats and knew what we had to change and we knew we could do it. There's nothing holding us back except for us and I think everyone kind of bought into that this week and we had really great practices. I think we were a little calmer this weekend and a lot more confident in our play. I think that really helped.
On The Momentum This Win Can Bring
A win on the road is a lot harder than a win at home but I think this will give us a really good swing into next weekend. We're going to be playing at a good level this whole week. I think we're going to have a lot of confidence for next weekend's game. I know it will be harder away. I know we'll have to battle through some things but I think it's a good stepping stone to winning away.

I think it started with the passing. We did a great job of executing. Jenna delivered the ball perfectly and I just focused on doing my job. But I think just the passing overall and the energy was great.
On The Defense Today
I think this week we did a really good job of focusing on our scouting and just being disciplined. I think it just started with good scouting and then just executing.
