Buffs Slip to Ninth in Final Round of the Pac-12 Preview

KAILUA KONA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado women's golf team was unable to make up any ground on Wednesday during the final round of the Pac-12 Preview, finishing the event ninth.
The Buffs had been tied for seventh through the first two rounds. After recording a pair of 299's during the first two rounds, CU shot a 304 in the third round and slid to ninth in the team standings. Overall, the Buffaloes finished with a 26-over 902 at the 6,429-yard par 73 Nanea Golf Club.
"We have a very good, competitive team," head coach Anne Kelly said. "We didn't really have one round this fall where we got everyone together at the same time. I think going into the off-season and getting prepared for the spring, we really need to work on shots from 50-yards and in. We'll come together, it just hasn't been our time yet. I think everybody is just a little bit frustrated with the way we played, but I think they are determined to get going and have a great spring."
No. 8 Arizona regained its lead from the first round and topped No. 22 UCLA, 857-859. Second-ranked Arizona State finished third (869) and No. 5 Southern California was fourth (875). Stanford, the top-rated team in the country, tied for fifth with No. 15 Oregon (880).
The Buffs were led by Alisha Lau and Malak Bouraeda on the final day as both carded a 2-over 75.
Lau was the top-performing Buffalo at the tournament, finishing with an even 219, which tied her for 17th. Through her first two rounds, she was 2-under (71-73). Her final round was another showing of her consistent play since returning from surgery. She only recorded three bogeys on Wednesday. Her day started on No. 6, where she made par, before hitting her first bogey. She was able to make another four straight pars before her second bogey on No. 12. Lau finished the back nine with six consecutive pars before turning back to the front nine. She recorded her final bogey on No. 1 and followed that with three pars. Lau sank a birdie on her final hole of the tournament.
"Alisha had a really good fall overall," said Kelly. "She played well today; she just couldn't get a birdie putt to drop. She played very solid."
Bouraeda finished second for the Buffs with a 4-over 224 and tied her for 28th. She recorded rounds of 75-74-75. In the final round, she recorded four bogeys but matched it with four birdies (and nine pars). Unfortunately, she finished her day with a double-bogey, which put her at 2-over.
"Malak played a really solid round of golf and was fighting hard," Kelly said. "She had a rough last hole, but she played a pretty good day."
Kirsty Hodgkins ended the event tied for 32nd. She shot a 5-over 78 in the last round after carding a 75 and 73 in the first two to finish with a 7-over 226. Her final round started well as she made four straight pars before recording a bogey on No. 11. Hodgkins continued to play well, making another seven consecutive pars to finish the back nine. As she went back to finish the front nine, she sank a birdie on No. 1, putting her back at even. But it did not last long as she hit a bit of a rough patch with a bogey on No. 2. After another par on No. 3, she recorded a triple-bogey on No. 4, which put her at 4-over. She finished her afternoon with one more par and a final bogey.
Issy Simpson made a four-stroke improvement from her second round to her third as she carded a 76 on Wednesday for her best round of the tournament. Beginning on the ninth hole, she made five pars before hitting a double and a bogey, respectively. It did not seem to faze her as she rebounded making par on the following hole. Simpson finished the back nine with a birdie on No. 17 and par on No. 18. The front nine were very consistent as she made par on all but one as she recorded a bogey on No. 3. She finished tied for 49th with a 15-over 234.
"Issy definitely putted much better today," said Kelly. "She was working on a few things with her putting and it seemed to improve, so that's good."
Elle Otten recorded her second 79 of the event and finished 56th overall with a final score of 239 (81-79-79). In her final round, she recorded one birdie, 14 pars, two bogeys and one double.
Washington's Rino Sasaki won the tournament (201) by two strokes, besting UCLA's Ty Akabane and Mariel Galdiano, who each finished with a 7-under 212.
With the conclusion of the tournament, the Buffs are finished with their fall schedule. They will begin their spring slate February 10, at the Lambkin Invitational in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
