Kountz Delivering Offensive Spark Off Bench For Buffs
December 05, 2019 | Men's Basketball
BOULDER — Colorado sophomore guard Daylen Kountz came alive off the bench in Wednesday's 76-64 home win over Loyola Marymount.Â
The sophomore had a season-high 11 points in 16 minutes for the No. 20Â Buffaloes and was just two points short of his career high. Kountz shot 4-for-6 from the field, including a highlight left-handed dunk at the end of the first half to pull the Buffaloes to within four right before halftime.Â
Kountz was born in Kansas City, Kan., and grew up in Denver. He attended George Washington High School before transferring to Denver East, where he graduated. As a freshman at CU, Kountz averaged 5.6 points and 1.3 assists and played in every game in 2018-19. The sophomore also saw two starts in his first season and started the first five games of this season for the Buffaloes, but he has come off the bench for the last two.
"I'm making sure I'm ready when my number is called." Kountz said. "I'm just being aggressive when I'm out there and making smart plays and making the defense be honest."
Kountz averaged 3.7 points in the first six games of this season. Wednesday he showed what he is capable of doing.
"At the end of the shot clock he made some really good plays at the rim and got to the foul line." Boyle said. "In the open floor he is really good."Â
Kountz also felt more comfortable in his play. He had a drive to the rim for a basket with just under nine minutes to play that gave Colorado a 53-52 lead, and he added two free throws two minutes later to put the Buffs up by one again, 56-55.
"I just have to get in rhythm." Kountz said. "I got in a rhythm early and got involved in the game playing defense and got some stuff going."Â
NEXT UP: The Buffaloes will travel to Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan., on Saturday for a contest with the second-ranked Kansas Jayhawks at 5 p.m. (ESPN2)
