Buffs Move Up In Lacrosse Rankings
February 18, 2019 | Lacrosse
BOULDER — Fresh off an upset of then-No. 14 Virginia Tech, the University of Colorado lacrosse team is moving up in the rankings and is currently 14th in the latest edition of the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Poll.
Â
The Buffs were 17th in the IWLCA preseason poll and moved up three positions after starting the season 1-1. CU lost its season opener to then-No. 6 Florida (16-9) in Boulder, but bounced back with a convincing 17-6 victory against the Hokies in Blacksburg, Va.
Â
Senior Samantha Nemirov led the Buffs with five goals and added an assist, while another senior, Miranda Stinson, had four goals, one assist and three caused turnovers. Junior Julia Lisella played well in net, stopping 12 shots while allowing just six.
Â
Boston College holds down the No. 1 spot in the IWLCA poll and received all 25 first-place votes. Maryland and North Carolina are second and third, respectively, and Northwestern moved up from seventh to fourth this week. Rounding out the top five is Florida. CU is the top Pac-12 Conference team as Stanford is listed at 21st and Southern California is ranked 24th.
Â
There are two other national lacrosse polls and CU is ranked in both. Colorado was 20th in both the Cascade/Inside Lacrosse Media and NIKE/US Lacrosse Magazine polls last week. After CU's win, the Buffs jumped up to 13th in the IL poll and to 15th in the USL poll.
Â
The Buffs have a pair of top-25 match-ups this week in Boulder. On Friday, Feb. 22, the Buffs will host No. 6 Stony Brook, which is opening its season in Boulder. Then on Sunday, Feb. 24, the Buffs host No. 25 Michigan.
