Boureada Finishes Second Individually

LAS VEGAS — The University of Colorado women's golf team recorded a sixth place finish at the Rebel/Beach Invitational on Tuesday afternoon and freshman Malak Bouraeda led the team with a runner-up finish.

Arizona took home the tournament crown. The Wildcats finished with a 14-over 878. They shot rounds of 291-294-293 during the two-day tournament. Only four strokes back was UNLV, which finished the tournament at 18-over (290-295-297—882). Virginia took third overall (296-299-297—892), Oregon was fourth (301-300-294—895) and San Jose State was fifth (290-297-311—898).

Colorado was in fifth through two rounds, but did not have enough to hang on during the third round at the 6,353-yard, par 72 Spanish Trail Country Club. The Buffs finished the tournament with a 37-over 901 with rounds of 299-303-299.

"Not quite the results we hoped for, but we're so excited for Malak and her second-place finish," head coach Anne Kelly said. "She played very smart, solid golf. All her hard work is starting to pay off. Kirsty (Hodgkins) had a rough event and didn't play at all up to her capabilities, but that happens to all golfers; sometimes it's just not your week. We saw good signs from Elle (Otten) and she keeps progressing. We have a bit of a break [before the next tournament] and are hoping for good weather to get in some good solid practice time."

Freshman Malak Bouraeda had the best finish of her collegiate career as she finished the tournament second overall. After the first round, she was tied for 14th after shooting a 2-over 74, but moved into a tie for third after the second round where she shot a 1-under 71. Bouraeda matched her second round in the third, which put her in sole position of second.

Her third round got out to a great start. She made par on the first hole, just missing a birdie, but then rebounded with an eagle on the next hole, her second of the season. During the remainder of her final 18, she made 13 pars, one birdie and two bogeys to stay 1-under for the round.

"The eagle [on No. 11] was pretty unexpected," Bouraeda said. "I hit a good shot into the green and it spun perfectly and went in. It was great to get it rolling early with that, especially because on my opening hole, I had left a birdie short two inches, so rebounding with that was special!"

Her scorecard of 216 is the best of her college career. Prior to this tournament, her previous best had been a 9-over 225, which she shot at the Branch Law/Dick McGuire Invitational, her first tournament as a Buff.

"To finish second is a great feeling," she said. "I have been working on some things with the coaches and a few of them clicked this week! It was a very fun event and I look forward to the next one in about a month!"

Finishing second for the Buffs was senior Gillian Vance, who tied for 25th with a 12-over 228. Throughout the tournament, she recorded rounds of 75-76-77. In her final 18, she started with a par, but then doubled on the following hole to go 2-up. She earned nine more pars, in addition to a pair of birdies and five bogeys.

Sophomore Elle Otten had her best team finish, placing third on the squad. She tied for 32nd and shot a 14-over 230 (74-80-76). Her third round started well as she recorded eight pars through the first nine holes; the other hole was a bogey. Unfortunately, she struggled a bit in her last nine holes with a pair of doubles and finished the day at 4-over (76).

Finishing fourth for CU was junior Kirsty Hodgkins, who had an off-tournament. Usually one of CU's top two, Hodgkins ended the tournament tied for 36th as she shot a 15-over 231 with rounds of 76-76-79. Her final round got out to a tough start as well with four bogeys in the first six holes. She tried her best to recover, but was unable to comeback and finished the day with a 7-over 79.

Colorado's other senior, Haley Nist, tied for 44th in the tournament. She recorded rounds of 78-80-75 for a 17-over 233. Freshman Kelsey Webster was playing as an individual and in her second collegiate tournament, finished tied for 63rd. She shot a 22-over 238 (79-84-75).

UNLV's Elizabeth Prior took home the tournament win with a 7-under 209. She recorded a 68 in the first round and followed that up with a 73 in the second round. She finished the tournament with another 68 in the third round and had a seven-stroke advantage over the runner-up, CU's Bouraeda, who shot an even 216.

The Buffs are back in action, March 15-16, at the Casa de Campo Invitational in the Dominican Republic.
