Golfers In Tie For Fifth At Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate

O'Loughlin Tied For Fifth Individually To Pace Buffs
PALM DESERT, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team moved all over the standings here Friday and eventually settled into a tie for fifth place after the first round of the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate.
No. 18 Texas Tech and No. 47 Colorado State are tied for the lead with 2-over par team scores of 290, unusual for this tournament as more often than not, the leaders shoot well under par. But the windy conditions made things tough for everyone; No. 51 TCU is in third, one back at 291, with No. 84 Boise State fourth at 293. No. 39 Kansas and No. 76 Colorado are tied for fifth with 297 totals.
The Buffaloes bounced around between being as high as in third place and as low as 12th before closing stronger than most teams.
Junior Daniel O'Loughlin led he Buffaloes with a 1-under par 71, playing a very steady round with four birdies and 11 pars on the 7,305-yard, par-72 Classic Club course. That has him tied for fifth individually, as he was consistent across the board, playing the par-5s at 2-under (10th-best in the field), the par-3s even and the par-4's at 1-over (eighth best). Standing at 1-over after a third straight bogey on No. 7, he finished up with two birds and nine pars.
Junior Ross Macdonald is tied for 24th after fashioning a 2-over 74; he was 1-over on the par-3s and par-4's and even on the par-5s en route to a team-high five birdies. He also had seven pars, five bogeys and a double, bouncing back to finish up with a birdie on the par-5 18th hole after playing the two previous holes at 3-over.
Sophomore Trevor Olkowski and freshman Kristoffer Max are tied for 47th with identical 4-over 76 scores; but how they arrived there was anything but the same.
Olkowski had four birdies and seven pars against six bogeys and a double; he was even through 12 holes before doubling the par-4 No. 13th. After scoring par on No. 14 (a par-5), he had a string of three straight bogeys until birdying No. 18.
Max's overage on the day can essentially be traced to one hole. He also had four birdies with 10 pars and three doubles. After making birdie on No. 12 to get to 1-under on the day, disaster struck on the next hole, eventually scoring a quintuple bogey on the par-4 13th that sent him to 4-over. Undaunted, he came back and birdied No. 14. He's third in par-3 scoring (1-under) and fourth in par-5 scoring (3-under).
Freshman John Paterson is tied for 64th after recording a 5-over 77; he had a birdie and 11 pars against six bogeys. He ended the day on a good note, scoring his lone birdie on No. 18.
Three Buffaloes are competing here among 15 players as individuals, meaning their scores do not count toward CU's team total. Sophomore Cole Krantz turned in a 5-over 77, junior Victor Bjorlow carded a 6-over 78 and junior Andre Leveque turned in an 8-over 80. Krantz is fifth out of those 15 individuals, as he had a birdie and 11 pars Friday; Bjorlow had three =birds and eight pars, while Leveque has 12 pars.
"Conditions got very tough midway through the round with high winds from the northwest around 20-25 miles per hour," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "Daniel had a really nice, steady round. The rest of the guys in the lineup fought hard. Other than one hole (the quintuple), Kristoffer played well, and Ross battled back to get to 74 which was a nice round. Trevor was off his game but he fought hard as well. John played well but his short game was a little off. Overall there were some good things to build on into the rest of the tournament.
"It looked like some of the guys playing as individuals had some good moments in parts of their rounds," he added.
Boise State's Skyler Eubank and TCU's David Ravetto are tied for the individual lead, as both carded 4-under 68s; there were just two other rounds shot in the 60s, with just two others under par and four others even. The 110 remaining players in the field were all over par (ranging from 1- to 18-over).
"The course played super hard all day," Edwards said. "But we're just seven out (of the lead), so we're primed to come out and make a move tomorrow."
The second round is set for Saturday; the Buffs will be paired with Kansas, CSU-Fullerton and host Wyoming and will tee off at 9:50 a.m. MST. NOTES: The average score for the field was 76.72 on Friday, uncharacteristic as the Classics Course is usually fairly user-friendly. How much so? Two years ago the Buffaloes shot their low round in history – also the lowest in the nation for the 2016-17 season – a 22-under par 266 in the second round … Almost as many players shot 80 or higher (27) than 74 or lower (33) … Colorado was third in par-5 scoring in the first round (5-under), seventh in par-3 scoring (2-over) and eighth in par-4 scoring (plus-18) … CU's designated scorers recorded 18 birdies, second to only Texas Tech's 19 … Very Rare: Max's quintuple bogey was the first by a Buff in four seasons, when the Buffs had three during the 2014-15 season.
