Stinson’s School Record 8 Goals Sparks Buffs Past Bears
March 10, 2019 | Lacrosse
BERKELEY, Calif. – Senior Miranda Stinson recorded a school record eight goals on Sunday afternoon, which helped propel the No. 23 University of Colorado lacrosse team past the California Bears, 17-11, at California Memorial Stadium.
The Buffs improved to 3-3 with the win and are now 2-0 in Pac-12 play, while the Bears are now 4-5 overall (1-1 Pac-12).
"To leave California with two wins is big for us and we need to keep building off of this," head coach Ann Elliott Whidden said. "We didn't do a great job today on some of the little things, ground balls and draw controls; we have to have a better effort as we move forward and more of a sense of urgency to finish plays. Outside of that, I thought we executed better than two weeks ago and finally put two games together back-to-back. Again, we need to build off of this and understand our potential when we compete for 60 minutes and execute our game plan. We are far from satisfied and know we need to keep getting better and control the things we can control."
WHAT HAPPENED: California scored two goals in the first 90 seconds of the game, but back-to-back goals from Sadie Grozier and Stinson evened the game with 22:08 left in the opening stanza.
The Buffs took their first lead of the game at 17:34 with Grozier's second free-position goal of the game. Following the score, the Bears needed to use a timeout, but it did not slow down the Buffs. Stinson tallied her second marker of the game less than two minutes after Grozier's second goal, putting CU up 4-2.
The Bears answered back, scoring another pair of goals to even the score at 4-4, but Stinson responded with a free-position goal, her third goal of the game, at 12:39 to put the Buffs back in the lead. Then, at 10:36, Grozier tallied her third marker of the game to put the Buffs back up by two (6-4).
Stinson was not done and notched another three goals in the half to score six in the frame, setting the school record for the most goals in a half.
Colorado led 9-4 at halftime, but did not let up, scoring another eight, including six in a row. After Grozier and Stinson combined for nine goals in the first half, Charlie Rudy and Samantha Nemirov added markers of their own. Rudy scored four in the second half, while Nemirov had one. Grozier and Stinson each added an additional two in the frame.
The Buffs rested starting goalkeeper Julia Lisella; giving Molly Galloway the start. She picked up her first win and stopped 10 of 21 shots she faced.
KEY STATISTICS: Colorado out-shot Cal 34-29. CU also limited its turnovers to 11 and caused 11 of Cal's 20 turnovers. The Buffs also led in saves, recording 10 to Cal's eight. The Bears had the edge in draw controls, 22-7.

"Not our prettiest game overall, but I thought we showed some resilience overall this weekend and we need that going into this middle stretch of our season."

"We will regroup and shift our focus to USC. This is another huge conference weekend for us coming up. Starting now that is all we are thinking about and all that matters. We know they are a great team, coming off a big weekend, and we have a lot to prove as we keep trying to dig ourselves out of the hole we got into. We will rest up, make sure we prepare well and be ready for our next challenge."
