CU Golfers Finish Ninth At Lamkin San Diego Classic

March 12, 2019 | Men's Golf

Buffs Record Second-Best Single Round This Spring

CHULA VISTA, Calif. — The University of Colorado men's golf team posted its second best single round of the spring here Tuesday, using it to move up two spots into a ninth place finish as the 12th annual Lamkin San Diego Classic came to a close.

No. 4 Arizona State held off a charge from No. 7 Texas to win the tournament.  The Sun Devils had a 10-under par 854 score, edging the Longhorns by one stroke after entering the final round with a 10-shot lead.  No. 49 St. Mary's claimed third place with an 860 total, jumping over No. 31 North Carolina (861) Tuesday, with co-host San Diego State (872) rounding out the top five.

The Buffaloes, ranked No. 77 nationally, turned in a 1-over par 289 score in the final round, closing with a 19-over 885 total which netted two-stroke wins over in-state rival Colorado State and Pac-12 rival Washington.

Junior Ross Macdonald posted CU's best score here, tying for 27th with a 4-over par 220, though closing with a disappointing 6-over 78 after entering the day in the hunt for medalist honors.  Things didn't go his way on the 7,033-yard, par-72 San Diego Country Club course layout Tuesday, particularly on the back nine where he was 5-over.  He had two birdies and nine pars against six bogeys and a double, the seven holes over par equaling the number he had the first two days.

Junior Daniel O'Loughlin tied for 34th after closing with a 1-over 73; he had a 6-over 222 total overall, which snapped a streak of eight consecutive sub-220 scores in 54 hole events dating back to last season.  After scoring just two birdies total on Monday, he did come back with a team-high five in the final round, but with just eight pars, those were offset by four bogeys and a double.  He was a little off his usual game here, as he had two double bogeys after coming in with just three in 378 holes.  His 36 pars over the two days tied for eighth-most in the field.

Sophomore Cole Krantz tied for 45th, as he fired a 1-under 71 to finish with an 8-over 224 total.  He had four birdies and 11 pars against three bogeys, spending his entire round within one stroke of even; he was actually 1-over for just a two-hole span before birdying three of his last six holes.   His best round this season has been the third, or final 18 holes, as he is averaging 70.8 strokes for five finishing rounds.  He had a team-high 10 birdies here, tying for 18th-most in the 92-man field.

Sophomore Trevor Olkowski sliced a stroke off his first two round scores here in shooting a 3-over 75, finishing in a tie for 61st with an 11-over 227.  He only had one "big" number here with a double bogey, as he had an eagle and six birdies with 29 pars, but had an unusually high count of bogeys with 17.

Freshman Kristoffer Max tied for 75th with a 15-over 231, but he had CU's best score in the final round, a 2-under 70, which also tied for the sixth-best round in the field.  He had four birdies and 12 pars with just two bogeys after having 15 holes over par combined through his first 37 holes.  He improved 14 shots from the second round score (84), the largest improvement from one round to the next in the tournament and for the Buffs this season; that's also tied for the ninth-best in school history.

"I was really pleased with the guys competitiveness today, I thought they did a great job," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.    "It's a real good sign if we could be competitive without playing our best.  There was still a lot of sloppiness, but we were able to scratch out a decent score.  So it was a nice way to end this tournament and look ahead to Tucson next week.  The effort was great, the competitiveness was good, we just need to keep improving in our course management and short game."

There was a three-way tie for medalist honors, all finishing with a 6-under 210 score: Blake Hathcoat (St. Mary's), Cole Hammer (Texas) and Mason Anderson (Arizona State).  Second-round leader Pierceson Coody of Texas shot a 77 and finished in a four-way tie for fourth.

The Buffaloes will turn right around and head back to the southwest to take part next Monday and Tuesday in the University of Arizona's National Invitational Tournament in Tucson.

NOTES: The average score in the final round the lowest of the three, coming in at 74.20; for the entire tournament (275 rounds), it was 74.78 … Colorado played the par-3 holes at 15-over, tied for fifth-best in the field (and played them even Tuesday); the Buffs were 7-under on the par-5s (seventh in the field), and was plus-35 on the par-4s (13th) … There were just 15 rounds shot in the 60s in the entire event … O'Loughlin remains the team leader in stroke average with a 71.58 figure for 24 rounds.
