Buffs Down Stanford To Win 100th game In Program History
March 08, 2019 | Lacrosse
STANFORD, Calif. – After starting the season 1-3, the University of Colorado lacrosse team knew it needed to get a win on Friday night against Stanford. And win the Buffs did, downing the No. 15 Stanford Cardinal, 20-11, at Cagan Field. Â
Â
The win was also special as the program was playing in its 100th game. Since the program started in 2014, CU has recorded a 67-33 record, all under head coach Ann Elliott Whidden.
Â
The Buffs, which were ranked 23rd entering the contest, improved to 2-3 overall, while the Cardinal is now 4-2. It was the Pac-12 Conference opener for both teams.
Â
"Going into this game, we knew we were in a bit of a hole based on last couple weeks," Whidden said. "Conference play is so important and Stanford is a great team, coming off a great weekend on east coast. I am proud of our energy and effort tonight. We had struggled offensively with our execution the last couple of games and our attackers have been focusing in on that the last two weeks. It paid off tonight. For us to be successful we need to execute on both ends of the field. We did a pretty good job of that tonight."
Â
Although it was truly a team effort, offensively the Buffs were led by a pair of Buffs: seniors Samantha Nemirov and Miranda Stinson. Nemirov recorded eight points in the game, tying a school record with seven goals. Stinson added five points with four goals and one assist. Junior Julia Lisella played well in net with a season-high 14 saves.
Â
WHAT HAPPENED: Stanford scored the first two goals of the game, the first at 26:21 and then again at 25:40, but Stinson was able to get the Buffs on the board a short time later, scoring her first goal of the game at 22:56. Stinson tied the game up at 2-2 just 26 seconds later with her second marker of the game after a Stanford turnover.
Â
The Cardinal went back up by one at 22:01, but back-to-back goals by Nemirov and Sophie Castillo put the Buffs up 4-3.
Â
SU came back to even the game at 16:43, but the Buffs responded with another pair of goals. Charlie Rudy scored her first of the game on a free-position shot, while Nemirov tallied her second of the game.
Â
The Buffs kept attacking and at 13:56, Sadie Grozier recorded a free-position goal, which forced the Cardinal to use a timeout. Out of the break, Grozier recorded her second marker (13:07) and then at 12:36, Devon Bayer notched her first goal of the contest; but was injured in the process and had to be helped off the field. Â
Â
Nemirov earned a hat-trick with 10:34 left in the first half, giving the Buffs a six-goal lead (10-4). Shortly after Nemirov's goal, Stanford's Kyra Pelton was issued a yellow card, giving the Buffs a man-advantage. The Buffs took a timeout and had several shot attempts, and with about 20 second left on the card, Liz Phillips found the back of the net to score her first collegiate man-up goal (11-4).
Â
The Buffs added two more goals (Nemirov and Stinson), before Stanford was able to put an end to CU's 9-0 run with a marker at 2:51 (13-5). But Nemirov was not done for the half and tallied her fifth goal of the half with 1:21 left, which gave CU a 14-5 advantage at halftime.
Â
The Cardinal was the first to score in the second half, cutting CU's lead to eight with 25:07 left in the game, but Grozier put CU back up with nine at 24:24 with her third marker of the contest (15-6). SU scored the next two goals to bring CU's lead to seven. The Cardinal kept the pressure on and scored another marker at 15:15, causing the Buffs to spend a timeout.
Â
SU brought the score within five at 13:46; but Nemirov ended the Cardinal's 4-0 run with her third free-position goal of the night. Less than a minute later, Rudy tallied her second marker of the game to give the Buffs a 17-10 advantage.
Â
Anna Collawn recorded her first goal of the game on a free-position attempt with 10:55 remaining in the game. SU scored the next goal, but CU answered with goals from Nemirov and Stinson to give CU a 20-11 lead with 6:07 remaining. Stanford scored two more times before the clock expired, giving the Buffs the much needed 20-13 win.
Â
KEY STATISTICS: Colorado converted on 7-of-10 free-positions attempts, while Stanford only made 2-of-8. Stanford also had 19 turnovers in the game, while the Buffs had 11.

"Stanford is a great team, with many players who can beat you in different ways. We knew they would respond in the second half and they did. I thought we did a good job responding as well and finishing the game. We know we need to get better and grow from this game. While I am proud of the effort, we know we are still in a hole and the only thing that matters now is Sunday, and shifting our focus to Cal."
