Golfers Slip Four Sports Into 10th At Pac-12 Championships

Buffs Manage Just 11 Birdies In Third Round
EUGENE, Ore. — The University of Colorado men's golf team couldn't get much going and thus never got untracked here Tuesday, falling from sixth to 10th place after three rounds of the 60th Annual Pac-12 Conference Championships.
No. 12 California moved up from third place to assume the lead, as the Golden Bears own a 15-under team score of 1,050; Cal turned in the best single round of the event so far Tuesday (a 12-under 343). First round co-leaders, No. 32 UCLA is three back (1,053) and Stanford four off the pace (1,054). No. 6 Southern California (1,073) and host and No. 39 Oregon (1,074) round out the top five.
The Buffaloes, ranked No. 78 nationally, entered the day tied for sixth and 12 strokes out of the lead, but ballooned to a 22-over 377 score for the third round and dropped down into 10th place with a 1,094 total. CU collectively managed to score just 11 birdies, but had 28 bogeys and seven holes worse than bogey that soured the day for the Buffs after a very good start a day earlier.
"It was one thing after the next, though I thought our effort was really good," head coach Roy Edwards said. "We just didn't score very well, just a rough day overall in the end. It was a little bit of a retraction to some of our issues earlier in the season, and on a tough golf course, that will add up to a high score. It comes down to that we played better (Monday) than today. We didn't execute as well, a bad day all around.
Junior Daniel O'Loughlin looked like he was picking up where he left off on Monday, when he ended the day tied for fourth in the standings. Climbing as high as second place after being 1-under through five holes, he finished his first nine (the back nine on the 7,044-yard, par-71 Eugene Country Club course) at 1-under. But he opened the front side with back-to-back double bogeys and closed double-bogey-bogey for his highest scoring nine holes as a Buff (42) and individual round (78), sending him to a 2-over 215 total for 54 holes and into a tie for 24th place.
Junior Ross Macdonald carded a 4-over 75 that has him tied for 34th overall with a 5-over par 218 total; he had a birdie and a team-high 12 pars Tuesday with five bogeys. His 37 pars over the three rounds are tied for eighth in the 72-man field.
Sophomore Cole Krantz recorded CU's best round of the day, a 3-over 74 that left him tied for 41st with a 7-over 220 score. He also had a team-best four birdies to go with nine pars, opposite three birdies and two doubles, the latter of which he scored late in his round (on Nos. 6 and 7). He went from 1-under to 4-over after bogeying No. 8, but did collect himself to finish his round with a birdie.
Sophomore Trevor Olkowski turned in a 4-over 75, giving him a 9-over 222 score and tying him for 51st. For his day, he managed two birdies and 10 pars against six bogeys, though two of those came on his last two holes of the round.
Macdonald and Olkowski are the only Buffs not to score worse than a bogey through 54 holes.
Freshman John Paterson was the third Buffalo to shoot a 75 in the third round, as he remained in a tie for 55th with a 1-over 224 score. Like Olkowski, he had two birdies and 10 pars against six bogeys and matched Krantz by finishing his round with a birdie on the par-4 9th hole.
Freshman Kristoffer Max was just 1-over through five holes, but a triple bogey on No. 15 (a 442-yard par-4) started him south on the day. He'd finish with a 10-over 81, just his fourth round in the 80s as a collegian and the second this spring as he is tied for 63rd with a 15-over 228.
"The guys are disappointed about today," Edwards said, "but I expect that we will go out and really compete in the final round, and I expect us to shoot a good score tomorrow."
California's Collin Morikawa shot the low round of the day – a 7-under 64 – and took over the individual lead with an 11-under 202 total through 54 holes. Utah's Kyler Dunkle, who led at the midway point, is just one shot behind at 10-under 203 after he recorded a 69 Tuesday.
The fourth and final round is set for Wednesday; Colorado will be paired with Oregon State and Washington State and will tee off on No. 10 beginning at 10:06 a.m. MDT.
NOTES: Colorado, on the bubble for the NCAA Championships, must first finish with a winning record against Division I competition (85-80-1 at present; needs to tie for eighth or better to secure it), and then move up some spots in the GolfStat rankings, as the NCAA utilizes those for selection of the 81 teams, minus those who qualify automatically by winning their conference title (there are 28 conferences) … Max has responded well after his three previous rounds in the 80s, recording scores of 74, 73 and 70 for a 72.33 average … The average score Tuesday was 72.96, identical to the overall scored for all 216 rounds over the two days … Colorado has the eighth-most birdies (47) and the sixth-most pars (194) … The Buffaloes are playing the par-4s the eighth-best here (32-over), and the par-3s (21-over) and par-5s (4-under) both the 10th in the field … The Pac-12 Network will broadcast final round competition beginning at 3 p.m. MDT ... The NCAA Championship selections will be announced live on the Golf Channel on Wednesday, May 1 beginning at 7:00 a.m. MDT (also streamed live on its website) ... Washington will host the 2020 Pac-12 Championships next April.No. 12 California moved up from third place to assume the lead, as the Golden Bears own a 15-under team score of 1,050; Cal turned in the best single round of the event so far Tuesday (a 12-under 343).
