O'Loughlin Opens Regional Play With A 2-Under 68

May 13, 2019 | Men's Golf

CU junior has steady day in tying for 19th in the standings

PULLMAN —University of Colorado junior golfer Daniel O'Loughlin opened play here in the NCAA Northwest (Pullman) Regional Monday with a 2-under par 68, a score that his him tied for 19th in the standings.

O'Loughlin had a very consistent round, scoring five birdies and 11 pars against a bogey and a double on the Palouse Ridge Golf Club course, a 7,232-yard, par-70 layout.  The latter came on a par-5 No. 5 hole that lifted him to 1-over at the time; he went on to play the last 13 holes at 3-under, including closing his day with a birdie on No. 18.  The five birdies tied for the 11th-most in the field, while playing the par-4 holes at 2-under, tied for the 12th-best.  He shot 35 on the front and 33 on the back.

"It was a nice opening round for Daniel", CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "He had some good par saves early in the round, he closed his day making a great birdie on 18 (a 551-yard, par-5) after hitting his drive in the penalty area."

"I'm pleased with the score I shot today," O'Loughlin said.  "Grinded out a few good pars and took most of my birdie chances when I had them. My overall game feels really solid, so I'm hoping for more of the same the next couple days."

Since the regional format came into being in 1989, O'Loughlin is the fifth Buff to qualify as an individual without his teammates; his 2-under par 68 is the lowest score in that group and just the second round of the 13 that was under par.  The previous best was a 1-under 71 by Stephen Carroll in 2003.

Three players are tied for the individual lead after scoring 6-under 64s: Chandler Phillips (Texas A&M), Garett Reband (Oklahoma) and Carson Lundell (BYU).  Reband made the turn with a 6-under 29 after opening with six birdies on that side.

In the team standings, just four strokes separate the top five teams.  No. 20 Texas A&M owns the lead with an 11-under par 269, with No. 5 Oklahoma (270), No. 8 Georgia Tech (27), No. 32 BYU (272) and Michigan State (273) lurking behind.  Locally, Colorado State is 11th (279) and Northern Colorado 12th (283).

O'Loughlin will once again tee off on No. 1 at 10:42 a.m. MDT, and again will be paired with the No. 3 golfers from Iona and Wright State.  The third and final round is set for Wednesday.

NOTES: Six regional tournaments are being conducted simultaneously across the nation over the next three days.  The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Finals, which will be May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark. (11 players are ahead of O'Loughlin for the latter at this early juncture) … The 68 marked O'Loughlin's 20th round in the 60s, his 33rd subpar round and 40th round of par or better out of 73 he has played in two seasons at Colorado … The average score in the first round (75 players) was practically par (70.03) … O'Loughlin led the Buffaloes in stroke average this season with a 72.0 figure, which is currently tied for the eighth-best for a single season in program history.
