O'Loughlin Finishes Tied For 47th At NCAA Northwest Regional
May 15, 2019 | Men's Golf
Finishes with a 2-over par 212 total
PULLMAN —University of Colorado junior golfer Daniel O'Loughlin enjoyed a much better final round here Wednesday in the NCAA Northwest (Pullman) Regional, though not enough to qualify for the NCAA Finals later this month.
O'Loughlin finished his season with a 1-under 69 to give him a 212 total for the three rounds (2-over par); that tied him for 47th in the standings. He had three birdies and 13 pars with just two bogeys, with most of his non-pars coming in a four-hole stretch (Nos. 5 through 8) where he scored birdie-bogey-birdie-birdie in shooting 33 on the front side. He bogeyed No. 11 and the parred out the remainder of the round on the 7,232-yard, par-70 Palouse Ridge Golf Club course.
To advance to the NCAA Finals, O'Loughlin needed to be the top individual not attached to one of the five teams that will advance but would finish 15 strokes behind the individual that did so. He tied for 27th among the group of 60 golfers who did not advance.
"Daniel was more of his steady self today," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "He always competes really well and stays within himself. He did that today and had a nice round. It was a good way to close out a really good junior season for Daniel."
"I had a much better round today," "O'Loughlin said. "My long game was a lot better and managed my way around the course better to give myself more chances, so I was fairly pleased with how I scored today.
"I'm happy to end my junior year with an under par round," he added. "I feel like this year results-wise was pretty good, especially in the fall semester. I had a lot of good results but need to improve on my bad results. I've been given areas to work on from Roy and Pat (assistant coach Grady), so I'm going to be working hard over the summer to get better. But I'm already excited to get back to competing with the team next semester."
BYU's Rhett Rasmussen carded a 7-under 63 for the second straight day to secure medalist honors, as he finished up with a 15-under 195. That edged UC-Santa Barbara's Zach Smith, who finished with a 65 for a 13-under 197 and earned him the individual spot to advance to the NCAA Championship Finals. Three others tied for third at 12-under 198, as 13 players in the field recorded rounds in the 60s all three days.
In the team standings, No. 20 Texas A&M led from wire-to-wire in claiming the team title with a 33-under par score of 807; No. 32 Brigham Young edged out No. 5 Oklahoma for the runner-up spot, the Cougars closing with an 809 tally and the Sooners at 810. No. 8 Georgia Tech (818) finished fourth, and No. 17 South Carolina earned the final team spot to advance with an 819 total, but had to defeat Colorado State by a single stroke in a playoff to do so.
NOTES: Six regional tournaments were conducted simultaneously across the nation over the next three days; four Pac-12 schools advanced to the NCAA Finals May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Ark.: No. 2 Arizona State, No. 7 USC, No. 10 California and No. 12 Stanford. Four missed the cut: No. 29 UCLA, No. 39 Oregon, No. 49 Arizona and Oregon state … The highest ranked teams not to advance were No. 15 Texas Tech, No. 24 North Carolina State and No. 28 Alabama … The average score in the final round (75 players) was par on-the-nose (70.0); for the tournament it was 70.22 … O'Loughlin finished as the team leader in stroke average this season with a 71.90 figure, which is tied for the seventh-best for a single season in program history … Since the regional format came into being in 1989, O'Loughlin, the fifth Buff to qualify as an individual without his teammates, is just the second CU player (out of 115 opportunities) to post two scores in the 60s in regional play, joining Bobby Kalinowski in 1994 (he shot 68-69-71—208 to finish second in Oklahoma City).
