O'Loughlin Earns NCAA Regional Invitation

Will Participate in the Northwest/Pullman Regional

BOULDER —University of Colorado junior golfer Daniel O'Loughlin has earned an individual berth into the NCAA Men's Golf Championships, as he will participate in the Northwest (Pullman) Regional set for May 13-15.

O'Loughlin led the Buffaloes in stroke average this season with a 72.0 average, Loughlin led the Buffaloes in stroke average this season with a 72.0 average, a figure that is currently tied for the eighth best for a single season in program history.  He posted CU's best score in six of the team's 12 events, and also led the team in a dozen categories: top 5, 10 and 20 finishes (3, 6 and 6, respectively), rounds in the 60s (9), subpar rounds (16), rounds of par or better (19), percentage of rounds counting toward team scoring (1.000, 37 of 37), first round average (69.91), middle round average (72.46), birdies (117), pars (430), and percentage of holes of par or better (82.3).

He won the first tournament of the season, firing a 7-under 209 to win Air Force's Gene Miranda Invitational last September.

"It is quite the honor for Daniel to be selected to play in the NCAA regionals," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "This will be his third regional in three seasons and it is a strong recognition for him having a really good season.  Palouse Ridge is a fantastic course and it suits Daniel's game well.  I expect him to go there and be quite competitive."

Though Colorado just missed qualifying as a team, in Edwards' 13 years at the reins of the program, the full team has earned a berth nine times and an individual on three other occasions, only being shutout from both on one occasion (2011).

Six regional tournaments will be conducted simultaneously across the nation, all 54 holes over the three days.  Thirteen teams and 10 individuals not on those teams will compete at each of three regionals while the other three regionals will have 14 teams and five individuals not on those teams.  The low five teams and the low individual not on those teams from each regional will advance to the NCAA Finals, which will be May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas.

In all, 14 teams and five individuals will participate in Pullman, including UCLA from the Pac-12.  Other individuals are Thomas Hutchison (UC Davis), Zach Smith (UC Santa Barbara), Tim Widing (San Francisco) and Jake Chanen (Grand Canyon).  O'Loughlin is the third-seeded individual of the five.

The Pac-12 qualified eight teams in all, with Arizona, Arizona State, California, Oregon, Oregon State, Stanford and USC joining UCLA; the only other individual who earned a berth was Utah's Kyler Dunkle.
