May 28, 2019 | Cross Country, Track and Field

BOULDER – Four Colorado track and field and cross country student-athletes have been named to the 2019 Google Cloud Academic All-District First Team, CoSIDA announced Tuesday afternoon.

For the women, three Buffaloes were named to 11-person First Team for District 7. Seniors Kaitlyn Benner and Michaela Wenning were named as well as junior Sage Hurta. On the men's side, junior Caleb Penner was named to the District 7 First Team. All four are automatically in the running to be named to The Google Cloud Academic All-America teams.

This is Benner's third All-District First Team selection after she was named to the team in 2018 and 2016. Last year Benner also was named to the Academic All-America Third Team. The senior has a 3.95 GPA in Chemical and Bioengineering and is a six-time All-American for the Buffaloes. She was named the 2017 Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year in cross country and was named the Pac-12 Scholar Athlete of the Year for track and field this year. She will be competing in the NCAA National Championships next week in the 10,000.

Wenning earns her first All-District First Team selection with a 3.94 GPA while double-majoring in Chemical and Bioengineering and Biochemistry. She also has three minors. Wenning has the fourth-best heptathlon mark in school history and will be competing at the NCAA National Championships in the event next week.

Hurta is a four-time All-American for CU with a 3.97 GPA in Chemical and Bioengineering. She was a pivotal part of Colorado's 2018 National Championship in cross country this season after she finished 22nd overall. Hurta redshirted this indoor and outdoor seasons in track and field but has the 28th-fastest time in the world in the 1,500 this outdoor season.

Penner has a 3.98 GPA while double-majoring in Engineering Physics and Applied Mathematics. The junior concluded his season at the Pac-12 Championships while competing in the hammer throw and discus. He posted personal best marks in both events this season and is just three-feet shy of the 10th-best mark in school history.
