The CU junior finishes tied for 15th
EAST LANSING, Mich. – Colorado junior Kirsty Hodgkins wrapped up the final round of the NCAA East Lansing Regional on Wednesday. She finished the week tied for 15th, missing out on a shot at a playoff to advance to the NCAA Championships by one stroke.
Hodgkins managed the 6,387-yard, par-72 Forest Akers West Golf Course with rounds of 72-71-76-219 (3-over). Her 54-hole total tied Esther Lee's 2016 finish for the fifth best by a Buffalo at an NCAA Regional.
Michigan State's Allyson Geer-Park (73-73-72-218) finished tied for 11th, edging out Hodgkins and Charlotte's Cecilie Finne-Ipsen for the final qualifier spot.
"Unfortunately, it was a tough day for Kirsty," head coach Anne Kelly noted after the day's round. "She hit the ball like a tour pro but struggled with the greens."
The timing of the NCAA Regionals directly overlapped with the University of Colorado's final exams. Hodgkins was still responsible for studying and taking the exams while juggling the 54-hole tournament.
"I think after studying and taking three engineering finals during the most important week of golf she was mentally and emotionally drained," Kelly added. "She had some late nights of studying and early mornings of golf. It's just a shame that the timing of the tests and tournament can't be a little different. We are so proud of Kirsty. She gave everything she had this week."
Day three offered up the most adversity for Hodgkins who finished 4-over on the day. She opened the round with a bogey on the 381-yard par-4 first hole and added another on the par-3 ninth, making the turn at 2-over (38). Hodgkins dropped another stroke with a bogey on the par-3 10th and added three more down the backstretch, including the 389-yard par-5 18th. She was able to counter with a pair of birdies on the par-4 11th and par-4 15th.
"She represented CU and our program extremely well," Kelly continued. "I know she is very disappointed she didn't qualify. The way she played tee-to-green was impressive this week. She really deserved to qualify, but it just didn't work out that way."
Hodgkins finished the tournament with seven birdies, all coming on the course's par-4s and par-5s. She was tied for eighth with a 4.03 average (+1) on the par-4's and was 2-below on the par-5's (4.83). She was consistent throughout the week, closing tied for eighth with 37 pars.
UCLA's Patty Tavatanakit (71-66-71, 208) earned medalist honors. Michigan State's Haylin Harris (69-72-72-213) and Xavier's Mikayla Fitzpatrick (72-73-71-216) joined Geer-Park as the top individual qualifiers from a non-qualifying team.
No. 12 Kent State slipped past defending national champion No. 5 Arizona for the top slot. The Golden Flashes finished three-strokes ahead of the Wildcats with a three-round 860 (4-under). UCLA, Stanford, Illinois and Indiana rounded out the top six to advance.
