Hurta Breaks School Record at Music City Distance Festival
June 01, 2019 | Track and Field
NASHVILLE – Colorado track and field redshirt junior Sage Hurta ran unattached Saturday evening and took the win in the elite women's 800-meter run at the 2019 Music City Distance Festival.
Â
Hurta ran the fastest women's 800 at the meet, crossing the line in 2:00.99. She opened the race with a 58.93, second at the bell behind 16-year old Athing Mu of Trenton TC. Hurta closed in a 1:02.07 to win the race by four-tenths of a second. It is nearly a three second personal best outdoors for Hurta after she ran 2:03.46 in April.
Â
The record is the first of Jenny (Barringer) Simpon's seven school records to fall. Simpson set the previous record at 2:02.54 in Cottbus, Germany a week before the 2009 World Championships.
Â
The mark would've been good for 17th in NCAA history but will not count because it is out of Hurta's collegiate season. It is the fastest such 800 this season and the fastest since Stanford's Olivia Baker ran last June.
Â
Other CU alums at the meet included Emma Coburn winning the women's 1,500 in a near personal best of 4:05.24. Nick Harris ran in the men's race, running 3:39.04 for third overall.
