O'Loughlin Wins Walton Heath Trophy

SURREY, England — University of Colorado senior golfer-to-be, Daniel O'Loughlin, shot a 2-under par 70 in the final round to move up from a tie for third into first and claim the prestigious Walton Heath Trophy here Friday.
O'Loughlin, CU's stroke average leader last season, was most steady here over the four rounds, shooting under par in each in recording a 69-69-71-70—279 overall scorecard to win by three strokes. That was good for 9-under par among rounds played on both the Walton Heath Golf Club Old and New Course layouts.
The 21-year old geography major had some familiarity – and some previous success at Walton Heath – as he finished 10th in the European Amateur here two years ago.
"I played really nicely all week," O'Loughlin said. "Going into the last day, I knew i was in contention to win but after the morning round, the guy leading (Jacob Davies) shot 6-under and I was seven shots behind going into the afternoon. So I wasn't really expecting much, just knew I had to shoot as low as I could in the afternoon and hopefully that would be enough to catch him or at least finish second.
Davies ballooned with a final round 82 to tie for fourth (284); Olly Huggins finished second with a 6-under 282.
"After the round was a bit of a shock finding out that I won, but I felt played really well final round," he continued. "I shot 3-under on the back nine, and that gave me the three-shot victory in the end. It was a tough day – the hottest of the year in England, walking 36 holes with the final 18 being a real grind. That probably reflected on a lot of the scores in the afternoon."
Temperatures reached 38 degrees Celsius, which translates a to 100.4 in Fahrenheit. Just 10 of the 45 golfers who made the cut managed to shoot under par in the final round.
"Overall, I was really happy with how I played and especially finishing strong, which in the end turned out to be enough to win," O'Loughlin added.
"This is a huge win for Daniel in one of the premier tournaments in England, and coming on one of its most prestigious courses," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "He beat a very strong field. Daniel continues to keep getting better and better and has developed into one of the top amateur players in the world whose game translates anywhere."
O'Loughlin was ranked 328th in the latest amateur rankings, compiled prior to this event.
This was the 15th annual event, which formally was known as the South of England Open Amateur Championship.
