Gold Team Prevails in Annual Scrimmage

August 24, 2019 | Volleyball

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's volleyball team played its annual Black and Gold Scrimmage Saturday afternoon with the Gold team coming out on top.

The Gold team picked up three set wins (25-20, 19-25, 25-16, 25-20), though the entire team performed well as the squads mixed lineups in every set.

Justine Spann led all players with 17 kills while hitting .268. She committed just six errors in 41 attempts. Teaming up with Jenna Ewert the entire match, the duo performed well with Ewert dishing out 35 assists. She also had five kills, seven digs and three blocks.

Colorado has a strong defense performance overall, tallying 17 total blocks between the two teams in the four sets. Meegan Hart led all players with six total blocks, while Jill Schneggenburger and Danielle Price each had five.

Numerous Buffs had 10 digs today, including Savannah Perry, Leah Clayton and Schneggenburger. The Buffs' serving attack was a strong improvement with 13 total aces.

Colorado begins the regular season next Friday against Wyoming at home at 6 p.m.

QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JESSE MAHONEY

How did the scrimmage go overall for the team
It was good to get out here and play in front of some other people. That kind of creates more of a game-like atmosphere and puts some anxiety on us. It's good for us to have that because we will have to work through that next week. With the rotation lineups it is hard to get into a rhythm, that being said I thought as the match went on we did a really nice job of building and getting better. Defensively we were very good. We went in and out of passing well and running the offense how we want to, but overall it was a good experience and definitely helpful figuring out the lineup for next Friday.

What players shined well today
I thought Rachel Whipple had a very good match, extremely well and served extremely well. Justine led everyone in kills, she was very consistent and managed her errors very well. From the freshmen standpoint, Sterling Parker showed us flashed of really high-level play from her. Jenna ran the floor like we wanted her to run the floor. It was a very good all-around effort and we are ready to play.

How ready is the team to be done with fall camp and on to the season
We are ready to be done with two-a-days, no doubt about that. They are happy to go class, probably the only kids on campus, us football and soccer, that are happy to go to class. We've kind of taken some steps in the preseason and we know what we need to work on and where we need to get better, identify things that are going to be issues for us and now we have to go put a lineup out there and get better at those things specifically.
