No. 6 Florida State escapes with a 3-2 win
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – An eventful evening between the No. 24 Colorado Buffaloes and the No. 6 Florida State Seminoles sided with the home team on Thursday night. FSU, the defending national champions, needed every last second to hand the Buffaloes the 3-2 defeat, scoring the game-winner in the 10th minute of the first overtime.
The loss marks the first on the season for CU, who now sits at 6-1-0. Florida State improves to 5-2-0.
Senior Taylor Kornieck scored both goals for the Buffs and goalkeeper Jalen Tompkins fended off a barrage of shots from the Seminoles, making nine saves. In the end, Florida State outshot Colorado 28-6.
Each side had a hard time establishing a flow to the match with the clock frequently getting whistled to a halt in the first half. Colorado picked up five cards in the first 45 minutes, including a red that was awarded to the CU bench. The officials handed out eight cards in all, leading to three total penalty-kick goals.
Kornieck scored the first of her two goals off a header in the 29th minute, giving CU the 1-0 advantage. FSU followed up in the 32nd with a penalty-kick goal to into the half even.
The Seminoles struck first in the second half, again on a penalty kick to gain their first lead of the night. Kornieck scored the equalizer for the Buffs in the 65th minute from the penalty spot. Tompkins kept CU in the match late with key save after key save.
Colorado was 12 seconds shy of forcing a second overtime when the Seminoles put the game-winner past Tompkins.
How it happened
Florida State played on the attack for the better half of the first period. The play was physical from the start and did not let up. Tatum Barton and Kayleigh Webb both picked up yellow cards in the first 25 minutes. Associate head coach Jason Green got sent off following Webb's card in the 25th minute.
It was Colorado who would catch the first break of the match, despite being outshot 7-0 up to that point. Senior Stephanie Zuniga sent in a perfect ball from the top corner and Kornieck put CU's first shot of the night into the back of the net.
A third yellow card against the Buffs helped Florida State even the score in the 32n minute. Florida State was awarded a penalty kick and Deyna Castellanos beat Tompkins for the tying goal.
Florida State broke the tie in 60th minute, converting on their second penalty kick of the night. Colorado returned the favor five minutes later when freshman Tessa Barton drew a foul inside the box. Kornieck scored with ease on the ensuing penalty kick to get back to even.
Both sides had shots to get the game-winner in overtime. The Buffs' best look came in the 83rd minute off the left foot of Zuinga She rocketed a shot just wide of the right post.
Florida State controlled the overtime period, leading 4-0 in shots. The Buffs were seconds away from getting to the second overtime when FSU snuck one past Tompkins with 99:48 on the clock.

Quotes
Head coach Danny Sanchez
Overall thoughts
"I thought we defended really well. Our back four were fantastic. They [Florida State] have four or five special attacking players. I thought we really neutralized them. JJ [Tompkins] did what she needed to and I was pleased with that. I thought we were a little impatient at times, but I was optimistic that we were able to score the two goals. It was not the result we wanted but we put ourselves in position to get a result on the road against a very good team."
On the play of CU's defense
"I thought our coaches put a good game plan together. The back four were very good. Kayleigh [Webb] and really the whole midfield really bought in and defended like warriors. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough tonight. I think we started to get stretched and got a little tired in overtime. It was a disappointing result, but we will regroup and get ready for Northern Colorado."
On Taylor Kornieck
"I thought Taylor was fantastic. Not just her two goals but her work in the midfield and on both ends of the ball. She had a huge impact on the game. We were really pleased with what she did against a top-quality team like Florida State tonight."
