CU Begins Season With Pair Ranked

September 17, 2019 | Tennis

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis program is gearing up for its fall season and enters the headlines with a pair of Buffaloes ranked in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Preseason Rankings.

Sophomore Sara Nayar begins where she left off last season where she helped lead the Buffs to their third-ever season finish ranked as a team and with an individual and double tandem. Nayar is ranked 65th in the nation as a single and joins Monica Malinen as the 53rd-ranked doubles team.

The duo have also been selected to compete in the ITA All-American Tournament that begins Oct. 5 and runs for more than a week. Malinen will compete in the prequalifying singles and will have to win three rounds to advance to the qualifying draw. Nayar was selected to the qualifying draw, and both Buffs will have to win two round there to advance to the main draw.

The tandem have been selected to compete in the main draw of the doubles tournament and will not have to advance through any qualifications. The prequalifying singles begins that Saturday and Sunday, followed by the qualifying rounds Monday and Tuesday. The main draw and doubles will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 9, and run through the next Sunday.

The competition features the best players in the nation, with selections based on returning All-American status, top regional representation and the preseason polls. Every round will feature 64 individuals for the singles and 32 teams in the main draw for doubles.

The Buffaloes will have one weekend of competition for prep, competing both at Rice University in Houston Sept. 27-29, as well as in Fort Collins that Saturday and Sunday. CU will also compete at Washington this fall season before going to Las Vegas twice, once for the ITA Mountain Regional Championships and once in the UNLV Rebel Invitational.

Colorado has five returners from last season and have added four freshmen to the squad. The freshmen squad is split evenly between international players and American with Antonia Balzert (Dusseldorf, Germany) and Sophia Derivan (Dublin, Ireland) coming from overseas and Maria Campos (Laredo, Texas) and Ellen Puzak (Minneapolis, Minn.) joining from the states.

The Buffs host a preseason Serve It Up With The Buffs event this Saturday to play with and against current CU players with lunch provided. Click here to register.
