Golfers Finish Seventh In UNM Tucker Invitational

September 28, 2019 | Men's Golf

Krantz' Even-Par 72 CU's Best Final Round Score

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Colorado men's golf team struggled along with the bulk of the field here Saturday and finished seventh as the 65th Annual University of New Mexico William H. Tucker Invitational came to a close.

Host New Mexico and Brigham Young tied for the team title, each recording 10-under 854 scores.  Second-round leader Arizona slipped to a third place finish, two back at 856.  San Diego State remained in fourth a 2-under 862, while Utah supplanted the Buffs in fifth in finishing at 10-over 874.

Colorado finished with an 18-over 306 in the final round, dropping to seventh in the standings with a 17-over 881.

The course set-up and pin locations made scoring harder for the 92-man field, as the average score increased by nearly two strokes from the first two rounds to 76.09.  Eleven teams recorded subpar scores over the first two rounds, whereas just one was able to in the final round, that being BYU and the Cougars were just 1-under, enough to catch host New Mexico to share the team title.

Senior Daniel O'Loughlin led the Buffaloes here, as he tied for 25th with a 4-over par 220 score.  He wrapped things up with a 76 as he had 12 pars with four bogeys and a double and no birdies – but he did have an eagle on the 544-yard, par-5 No. 1 hole.  It was his second eagle this year and the fifth of his CU career.

Sophomore John Paterson entered the final round in a tie for sixth with a chance for top five finish, but slipped into a tie for 30th with a 5-over 221 after shooting a 9-over 81 Saturday.  He did score 11 pars, but on his other holes, he had five birdies and two doubles, opening his day with one of the latter.  His 35 pars for the weekend were a team-high and were 10th most in the field, and he wound up playing the 30 par-4 holes combined at 1-over, 11th-best among those competing here.

Senior Ross Macdonald tied for 40th with a 7-over 223 score; he finished up with a 5-over 77, but it was a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde sort of round.  He was 10-over par after eight holes, with four bogey and three doubles; he then collected himself and finished with an eagle, three birdies and six pars to slice five strokes off that overage.  His 11 birdies overall led the Buffaloes here, also tying the 14th most in the field.

Junior Cole Krantz tied for 44th after fashioning a final round par 72, CU's best score of the day on the 7,555-yard, par-72 UNM Championship Golf Course; he was one of just nine players to match par in the final round.  He had a team-high five birdies Saturday, to go with nine pars, three bogeys and a double.  He moved up 19 spots from 63rd in the process, the second-largest position jump in the field.

Redshirt frosh Adam Matteson tied for 79th, finishing with a final round 82 for a 19-over 235 total.  He had an up-and-down weekend, opening with an 81 and then rallying for a 72; Saturday, he had a birdie and six pars with 11 bogeys, so he actually avoided the big numbers that accounted for most of his strokes over par the first two rounds (two double bogeys, a triple and a quadruple).

"We got off to a rough start as a team," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "It was a tough day overall and just a battle throughout. This golf course and tournament is an education in course management and we should learn a lot from this week."

BYU's Peter Kuest led from wire-to-wire to capture medalist honors, finishing with a 16-under par 200 score to win in a rout, besting two runner-up finishers by nine shots.  Kuest had the only round in the 60s on Saturday with a 5-under 67, with just six others breaking par.

The Buffaloes will resume action in 10 days in its own third Mark Simpson-CU Invitational at Colorado National Golf Club on Oct. 7-8.

NOTES: The average score for 184 rounds Friday was 74.23 compared to the 76.09 for the last 18 holes …  The Buffs finished with the fourth-most birdies here (46) but the11th-most pars (145) … CU also finished sixth in par-5 scoring (18-under), eighth in par-4 scoring (plus-39) and 12th in par-3 scoring (22-over) … CU, New Mexico and New Mexico State are the only schools to have played in all 65 William H. Tucker tournaments; CU's best finish remains second on three occasions, last in 2012.
