Buffs Record Best Score in Second Round

USAFA, Colo. — The University of Colorado men's golf team enjoyed the best day in the 18-team field here Saturday, as the Buffaloes used a 10-under par team performance to jump from fourth into second after two rounds of the 51st Annual Gene Miranda Air Force Falcon Invitational.

Host Air Force continued to lead its own tournament, finishing 36 holes at 12-under par 564.  The Buffaloes, nine behind the Falcons at the start of the day, shaved seven strokes off their lead after turning in a 10-under score of 278, the best single round in the tournament, to move to 10-under 566 overall.  Northern Colorado (569), Wyoming (570) and UC Davis (575) round out the top five.

The five designated scorers for CU, the defending champion here, recorded 22 birdies between them Saturday with just 12 bogeys, and for the second straight round, had no holes worse than bogey.

"We had a good day today," CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  "Victor played especially well.  We are very happy for him.  The guys did a great job of managing their strategy and positioning.  I was most impressed with how we played-with patience and consistency.  I expect us to come out again and do the same thing tomorrow from the first tee to the last putt."

Sophomore John Paterson posted a second straight 2-under 70 to have him tied for seventh with a 4-under 140 total.   He had four birdies and two bogeys the second time around USAFA's Eisenhower Blue track, a par-72 layout that spans some 7,511 yards.

Senior Victor Bjorlow matched his career-best with a 5-under par 67, as he put together a solid round with six birdies and 11 pars countered by a single bogey.  That effort vaulted him from a tie for 31st also into one for seventh to match Paterson.

Senior Daniel O'Loughlin, the tournament's defending champion, came back from a first round 73 to shoot a 3-under 69, with his 2-under 142 score tying him for 14th.  It was his 22md round in the 60s in his Colorado career, and the 35th subpar as he had five birdies and 11 pars Saturday.

Junior Cole Krantz fashioned a second straight even-par 72 for a 144 score, tying him for 25th.  He matched his exact first round breakdown with three birdies and 12 pars and three bogeys.

Redshirt freshman Adam Matteson, playing in his first collegiate tournament, shaved three strokes off his first 18-hole effort Friday with a 1-over 73.  He recorded four birdies and nine pars, just missing his first even-par round with a late bogey with two holes to play.

Senior Ross Macdonald and sophomore Kristoffer Max are competing here as individuals, with each posting identical 72-73—145 scores (1-over par) to stand tied for 31st.  Both had five birdies in the second round.

Southern Utah's Jake Vincent assumed the individual lead, thanks to a 6-udner 66 that has him at 10-under 134 heading into Sunday.

The third and final round is set for Sunday morning; the Buffaloes will be paired Air Force, Northern Colorado and Wyoming and will tee off on No. 1 starting at 9 a.m.

NOTES: The average score for Saturday's round was 74.24, with the average for 36 holes for the 104 players competing here at 74.27 … Colorado leads the field in par-5 scoring at 12-under through 36 holes … This is the 37th time the Buffaloes are competing in this tournament, and the Buffs are looking to win it for the eighth time; they have won the event seven times, along with five runner-up finishes and five third-place efforts.
