Bey Notches Sixth Double-Double In Win Over Oregon

January 02, 2020 | Men's Basketball

BOULDER — Colorado junior forward Tyler Bey had his sixth double-double of the season Thursday night in a 74-65 win over fourth-ranked Oregon.

Bey had 15 points and led the Buffaloes in rebounding with 14. The junior got off to a strong start, scoring Colorado's first four points of the game and finishing the first half with six rebounds. Bey's strong play continued into the second half, recording eight rebounds and 11 points. This included a dunk on the end of an alley-oop pass from senior guard Shane Gatling that gave the Buffs a 15-point lead early in the second half, their largest of the game.

"Tyler was great. He rebounded, he defended, he blocked shots, he scored the ball." head coach Tad Boyle said, "The 15 footer looks that he had in the first half, I loved them because he can make that shot on a consistent basis."

The double-double was the junior's first in eight games. After recording five double-doubles in his first six games, he had not had one since Nov. 30 against Sacramento State, when he had 11 points and 17 rebounds.

"I've been slacking on my rebounds the past few games." Bey said, "I just wanted to pick it up, especially in this game. We were playing Oregon so I had to go to the boards as much as I could."

Bey was born in Las Vegas, Nev., and played high school basketball in Los Angeles, Calif. at Middlebrooks Academy. He has been a starter for the Buffs for the past two years and was an All-Pac-12 Conference first team selection last season. The junior was also a preseason All-Pac-12 Team selection this year.

Coming into the game Thursday, Bey was ranked first in the Pac-12 in defensive rebounds (6.9 drpg) and second in overall rebounding (9.4 rpg). The Colorado forward also owns the top rebounding performance in the Pac-12 this year when he had 19 against Wyoming on Nov. 24. On top of rebounding, Bey has also had strong passing outings this season. He already has more assists through 13 games (25) than he did in 36 games last season (23).

"He keeps becoming a better passer." Boyle said, "He's becoming a willing passer and starting to take pride in that."

NEXT UP: The Buffaloes continue Pac-12 conference play at home Sunday against Oregon State at 4 p.m.
