CU's Siewert Notches Double-Double In Win Over WSU

January 24, 2020 | Men's Basketball

BOULDER —  Colorado senior forward Lucas Siewert recorded his first double-double of the season to help the 23rd-ranked Buffaloes to a 78-56 win over Washington State on Thursday night at the CU Events Center.

Siewert finished the game with 16 points and a season-high 10 rebounds. His 10 rebounds tied a career high, with the other two instances coming in his two other double-doubles, back-to-back games against Portland and Colorado State last season. He was one of three Buffaloes to record a double-double in Thursday's win, along with Evan Battey, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds, and McKinley Wright IV with 10 points and 10 assists. The last time three players had doubles-doubles for Colorado was Dec. 1, 2018, against Colorado State when Siewert, Wright, and Tyler Bey all had one.

Siewert was in the starting lineup Thursday for the first time this season due to Bey suffering an injury earlier in the week. Siewert also played the most minutes he had all season (29).

"Coach told me to just go out there and play my game," Siewert said, "I've started before so it wasn't anything new but it was a little bit of an adjustment."

Siewert grew up in Brazil but moved to Los Angeles, Calif., for high school. He is currently averaging 7.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game this season. This game was the second time he had led the Buffaloes in scoring. The first time was when he recorded 21 points in a loss to Northern Iowa. Although he had not had double-digit rebound totals prior to the game Thursday, he did lead the team in rebounds in CU's previous outing against Arizona, where he brought down seven.

"He has become such an integral part of this program," head coach Tad Boyle said.  "His teammates really trust him. He is a good shooter and stretches the defense. He is a problem for other teams."

Siewert began the game strong, bringing down a rebound off the offensive glass in the second minute of the game that led to him hitting a 3-pointer to bring the game level at five points a piece. He also had another 3-pointer in the first half that brought the Buffs to within one point and made the score 25-24.

"That was big for me," Siewert said, "When I see a couple going in, I know it's going to be a good night. I'm just going to keep shooting regardless, so when it's going in, you know everyone is happy."

NEXT UP: The Colorado Buffaloes will return to the CU Events Center Saturday night when they will host the Washington Huskies at 7 p.m. (FS1).
