Colorado Takes No. 6 Stanford to the Brink

January 24, 2020 | Women's Basketball

Buffs fall short in overtime, 76-68

STANFORD, Calif. – Colorado's women's basketball team gave No. 6 Stanford a run for its money at Maples Pavilion on Friday night. A last-second Cardinal basket forced overtime and the home team outlasted the Buffaloes in the extra time, 76-68.

Junior Mya Hollingshed hit a would-be game-winning 3-pointer with 1.6 seconds to play in regulation, giving Colorado a 64-62 lead. The lead wouldn't hold as Stanford got a quick layup off the inbound play and tied the game at 64, forcing overtime.

Colorado shot 41.1 percent (23-56) on the night and outrebounded Stanford 36-32. The Buffs fought through a four-point second quarter to retake the lead by the end of the third. Colorado had Stanford on the ropes in the fourth quarter, getting out to a seven-point lead, 59-52, with 3:27 to go, but the Cardinal used a 12-5 run to force the overtime.

Freshman Jaylyn Sherrod led the Buffs with a season-high 21 points. She passed the 100-assist mark with seven on the night, becoming the second-fastest CU player to 100 assists in program history. Hollingshed finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Aubrey Knight totaled 12 points and four rebounds off the bench.

Stanford's Lexie Hull led all players with 29 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Buffs came out with a fire in their eyes in the first quarter. After a 0-for-3 start, Colorado went 3-for-3 from the floor, fueled by 3's from Sherrod and Knight, to give CU an 8-6 lead. Sherrod scored 11 points in the quarter. The freshman went 4-for-5 from the field, finishing with a layup in the final seconds to put the Buffs up 21-13 after the first.

The Buffs were aggressive on the boards in the first 10 minutes, outrebounding Stanford 13-5. CU decisively won the offensive glass, snagging seven offensive boards. The Buffs outscored the Cardinal 8-0 in second-chance points in the quarter.

Offense was hard to come by in the second as both teams started off cold. Stanford went 0-for 8 to start before hitting its first field goal at the 5:25 mark, cutting the CU lead to 21-16. Colorado's shooting struggles lasted the entire quarter, scoring just for points from the free-throw line.

Turnovers also plagued the Buffs before the half. Colorado turned the ball over in their first two possessions and nine times in the frame. Despite the turnover trouble, the Buffs maintained the lead for nearly the entire quarter. Stanford's Nadia Fingall hit a 3 with 1:15 to go, giving Stanford the 27-25 lead at the break.

The Buffs started 0-for-2 out the half, extending their slump to 0-for-10. Hollingshed finally broke through with a layup to cut the Stanford lead to 30-27. Stanford's lead hit five, 35-30, with just over seven minutes to go in the quarter. A Knight 3-pointer got CU started on an 11-2 run, retaking the lead (41-37) with 1:11 to go in the period.

Both teams shot 9-for-15 (60 percent) in the fourth quarter. The Buffs had a 5-for-5 stretch early in the quarter. Hollingshed put the finishing touches on the streak with a long-range 3, giving the Buffs a 53-48 lead. Another 3 from Knight boosted the Buffs to the seven-point advantage.

Hull put Stanford on her back in the fourth quarter. She scored 12 points and gave Stanford its first lead of the quarter with 19 seconds to go. Hollingshed hit the 3 and Prectchel answered to force the OT.

The young Buffs got out-muscled in the overtime, getting outscored 12-4. CU again scored all four points from the free-throw line, going 0-for-3 in the extra period.

KEY STATISTICS: Colorado got bit by the turnover bug again in the overtime. The Buffs held the lead, 68-67, but gave it back with Stanford scoring six points on three consecutive CU turnovers.

NOTES: Colorado led for a total of 29:54…Stanford's first (13) second (14) and third (12) quarter scoring was just the 10th,11th and 12th quarters this season the Cardinal has scored below 15 points…CU's second-quarter shooting (0-8) was the first time CU had not made a field goal in a quarter since the first quarter at Oregon last season (0-13)…CU is 0 for its last 19 against ranked opponents (Last win, No. 24 Miami Nov. 18, 2017)…CU is now 1-1 this season in overtime (win vs UAB)…Sherrod made a season-high eight field goals…Quinessa Caylao-Do tied her season-high with seven rebounds.

NEXT UP: The look to end the road trip on a positive note at California on Sunday. The Bears are 0-7 in Pac-12 play after a 71-62 loss to Utah on Friday.

QUOTES
Head Coach

Overall thoughts
"I'm really proud of how we played for a large part of this game. Even the second quarter that was not very good offensively, I thought we stayed competitive. We continue to defend. We continue to rebound, even when shots weren't falling. We are young. We're going to be in these games. As long as we continue to fight and scrap and stay together, we'll give ourselves an opportunity. Honestly, that's all you can ask for in such a great conference."

On emotions in the final seconds of regulation
"As a group, I think we were really disappointed. When she [Prechtel] made that shot because Mya's make was such an emotional high. You have to play the full 40 minutes. They're a great team with a lot of talented, McDonald's All-Americans on their roster and they made big plays when they needed to."

On Jaylyn Sherrod
"She was phenomenal tonight. I thought our whole team did a great job, screening and rebounding. It wasn't just the scoring but like Quinessa didn't score but she had six offensive rebounds. Those were huge possessions for us that we needed. I thought it was a great team effort overall. I love that we continue to play as a team."

On the overtime
"
They [Stanford] are No. 6 for a reason. They're a very good disciplined, experienced basketball team with one of the greatest coaches in the history of the game. I thought our competitive nature was there, we just turned the ball over too much especially in overtime. We turned the ball over too much flat out. You can't do that against a really good team and we did."
