Leonard Signs With BA London

October 09, 2020 | Women's Basketball

BOULDER--Former women's basketball standout Kennedy Leonard signed with BA London of the Women's British Basketball League Wednesday, her second professional contract in as many seasons since graduating from the University of Colorado.

A two-time first-team All-Pac-12 performer and CU's all-time assists leader, Leonard graduated from CU in 2019 and last year played professionally for Herner TC of the Damen-Basketball-Bundesliga League in Germany.  In 12 games in the DBBL, she averaged 11.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game while shooting over 50 percent from the field.  In six EuroCup games, her scoring was slightly down to 10.3 points per game, but here rebounds (4.7) and assists (4.3) were both up, and she still averaged 1.2 steals per game.  She earned a DBBL Player of the Week honor

This will not be Leonard's first time playing in Great Britain.  She was a member of the British U20 National Team in 2016 and in the European Championships she averaged 13.2 points, 3.5 assists, 2.5 steals, and 1.8 rebounds per game after her freshman season at CU.  She was born in Hackensack, N.J., and considers Southlake, Texas, home, but she became a British citizen by way of her mother, Lyndsey, a Scotland native.  She also made her GB senior debut in 2019 against Sweden.

Leonard is one of five new players that BA London has signed along with another former GB U20 player and LSU alum Shanice Norton, Central Michigan alum Cassie Breen, Cornel alum Stephanie Umeh and Austrian pro Valentia Klocker as the team looks to rebuild after a tough 2019-20 season in which they lost all 16 games in the shortened WBBL season.

Leonard is one of a handful of former Buffs playing professionally in Europe.  Mathilde Diop played for Colomiers in France last season, Alina Hartmann will play in Gran Canaria in Spain this season, Chucky Jeffery will play for Bydgoszcz in Poland this season, Anja Putnina played for Cankaya in Turkey last season, Alexis Robinson played for Gorizont in Belarus last season and Jamee Swan will play for Sparta in Luxembourg this season.
