Buffs Set to Host 1994-95 Women's Basketball Reunion

BOULDER – 25 years have passed and one team in particular in Colorado women's basketball history has withstood the test of time.
The 1994-95 Buffaloes are still the only team in program history that can claim a 30-win season. They are also the last team to win a regular-season conference title, finishing 14-0 in the Big Eight. The Buffs, led by Hall of Fame coach, Ceal Barry, ran through the Big Eight Tournament and earned the conference's first No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament. CU climbed to as high as No. 2 in the NCAA and became the second in CU history to make the Elite Eight before its tournament run came to an end.
The memorable squad included the likes of All-Americans Shelly Sheetz (First Team) and Isabelle Fijalkowski (honorable mention), as well as All-Big Eight honorable mention Erin Scholz.
"It's exciting for these former players to have an opportunity to come back to CU, see their former teammates, meet their children and spouses and reconnect after 25 years," Barry noted. "I'm so thrilled that most of the 1994-95 team, coaching staff and support staff will be in town for the weekend. I look forward to spending time with each of them."
The historic team will once again convene in Boulder to celebrate their 25-year reunion when the latest edition of the Buffs host Stanford and California, Feb. 14-16.
"There is nothing better than connecting our past to our present," head coach JR Payne said. "We have such a rich tradition of success in our women's basketball history and it's important for our current players to know and appreciate that greatness."
The reunion weekend kicks off with the Jane Wahl Legacy Award pre-game reception before the CU's 7 p.m. MT tip against Cal. JWLA, named for CU's first Women's Athletics Director, Jane Wahl, who ushered in women's sports programs in the mid-70s, after the passing of Title IX legislation, is presented to a member of the CU women's basketball community who through their achievements bring honor and recognition to the university and CU athletics. This year's award recipient is former Buff Erin Carson (1984-88). She will also be presented the honor on the court at halftime against the Bears.
"My heartfelt congratulations to Erin Carson, the fifth Jane Wahl Legacy Award recipient," Wahl exclaimed. "After her stellar years at CU, the journey she has passionately, and so successfully, pursued has greatly impacted the lives of many people by assisting them to flourish in their health and fitness endeavors. Her life is truly a remarkable legacy for those who know her and those who will come after her."
Carson was the captain of CU's first NCAA Tournament team in 1988. She currently is the co-owner and operator of RallySport, a Boulder training facility and health club. In addition to the leadership duties associated with running a successful facility, Carson runs ECFit Boulder, a strength program designed for athletes seeking to perform at their very best. Her clients include world champions, Olympians as well as everyday athletes seeking excellence.
Saturday's events include a tour of the CU Event Center, attending practice and an evening reception with the current coaching staff.
The weekend concludes with a pregame brunch before CU's noon meeting with Stanford. The '94-'95 team will be honored on court during halftime against the Cardinal.
