Golfers Finish 13th In First Tournament Of Spring

Drop two spots in final round of Amer Ari Invitational
WAIKOLOA, Hawai'i — The University of Colorado men's golf team opened its spring season here this weekend and finished 13th Saturday as the 29th annual Hawai'i-Hilo Amer Ari Invitational came to a close.
The Buffaloes had a fairly pedestrian performance here, not posting many big numbers but just couldn't get any of their contingent on a roll. The end result was a 3-over 291 score for the final 18 holes and an overall team score of 863, which was 1-under par overall.
No. 1 Pepperdine rallied for the team victory, using the day's low round to move from fourth into the winner's circle with an 825 team score (39-under par). No. 19 Texas grabbed the runner-up spot, two back at 827, while No. 10 Arizona State climbed into third (828). No. 44 Oklahoma State and No. 2 Georgia Tech, which led after each of the first rounds, tied for fourth with 830 scores.
Senior Ross Macdonald wound up pacing the Buffaloes in the end, wrapping things up Saturday with a 2-under par 70, CU's best final round effort, on the 7,074-yard, par-72 Waikoloa's King's Course layout. He was 2-under for the three rounds with a 214 score, which tied him for 44th. His 36 pars were the 10th-most in the 123-man field, and he played the par-3s and par-4s the best of the Buffaloes at 1-over for each.
Sophomore John Paterson and junior Cole Krantz tied for 49th with 1-under 215 totals, each having recorded a final round 73 much in the same fashion (three birdies, 11 pars, four bogeys). Patterson, along with three others, led the field in pars for the event with 39. Krantz led the Buffs in birdies here with 11.
Senior Daniel O'Loughlin uncharacteristically struggled here, closing with a 75 for a 6-over 222 total, which had him tie for 90th. CU's stroke average leader coming in with a 70.43 mark, he saw it rise to 71.06, as he rarely has been six strokes or more over par for a tournament as a Buff (just six times in 26 tournaments). He did record his third eagle of the year on Saturday, but otherwise had two birdies and nine pars against five bogeys and just his fifth double bogey on the year (out of 306 total holes played). He did play the par-5s the best by the Buffs at 6-under.
Redshirt freshman Adam Matteson also shot a 6-over 222 to join O'Loughlin in a tie for 90th. He struggled in the final round, carding a 6-over 78, as he managed two birdies and 12 pars but had five bogeys and one triple, the latter coming on the par-4 17th. To his credit, he played his last eight holes for the round at even-par.
Sophomore Kristoffer Max competed as an individual and closed with a 5-over 77, giving him an 8-over 224 score that tied him for 95th. His overage was traced to a pair of poor holes, as he had a double and triple bogey which unfortunately counted an eagle on the par-5 4th hole.
"Today was a bit of a mixed bag," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "We fought pretty hard through the middle of the round after a shaky start. We could have had a better finish at the end of the round but we competed hard. However, there were lots of positives from the week. Ross scored well without hitting it great. We beat some good teams and we for sure are getting better."
The Buffaloes will return to action in two weeks, participating in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate in Palm Desert, Calif., Feb. 21-23.
NOTES: The average score Saturday was 73.20, the highest of the three rounds, bringing the average for the tournament to 72.80 for 268 total rounds … The Buffs were 2-4 against their Pac-12 Conference counterparts after going 0-6 against them in the fall; the wins here came against No. 25 Stanford and No. 26 Oregon State … The Buffaloes tied for the 12th most birdies (49) and had the eighth-most pars (164) by the five designated scorers … All six players have combined to play 324 holes, scoring two eagles, 56 birdies, 198 pars and 62 bogeys, with four doubles and two triples … Colorado played the par-5 holes the best here, at 24-under par, eighth-best the field; the Buffs were 12th on the par-4s (20-over) and 13th on the par-3s (12-over, though just plus-3 in the final round) … This was the 15th straight year the Buffaloes have opened the spring portion of their schedule in this tournament (the 17th time overall); their best finish was fourth place in 2018.
