NCAA Ski Championships Cancelled After Freestyle Races

March 12, 2020 | Skiing

BOZEMAN, Mont. –Junior Sondre Bollum and freshman Magnus Boee both finished in the top 10 in the men's 10K freestyle race for the Colorado Ski Team, which concluded about 45 minutes before the NCAA issued a statement canceling all winter and spring national championships.

"Today, NCAA President Mark Emmert and the Board of Governors canceled the Division I men's and women's 2020 basketball tournaments, as well as all remaining winter and spring NCAA Championships," the statement read.  "This decision is based on the evolving COVID-19 public health threat, our ability to ensure the events do not contribute to the spread of the pandemic, and the impracticality of hosting such events at any time during this academic year given ongoing decisions by other entities."

"The CU athletic department is committed to the health and safety of our student-athletes, staff and fans as it relates to COVID-19," CU Athletic Director Rick George said in a statement.  "As the situation is developing rapidly, we continue to collaborate with leaders from campus, the Pac-12 and NCAA as we make decisions that are in the best interest of our student-athletes and staff."

It is unclear if the NCAA Ski Championships, particularly the team results, which officially became 50 percent compete earlier Thursday, will be counted in the record books or not.

"The season is over for us with ski areas closing and campus moving to a remote environment," CU coach Richard Rokos said. "If I look back, it was a good year, the process was fantastic.  I always put an emphasis on the process.  We'll never know the ultimate outcome of the NCAA Championships, but this year will stay unique because we've never had anything like it and hopefully we never do again.  I think for the kids it's difficult, they prepared and worked hard, and were expecting to compete."

The Buffs did move up three places in the standings, from eighth entering the day to fifth at the conclusion of the women's 5K and men's 10K freestyle races.  Utah took the lead from Denver and has 293 points to DU's 261.  Middlebury is third with 216 points followed by Vermont (190) and then the Buffs total of 158 sits fifth.

Bollum finished sixth and Boee eighth to both earn second-team All-America honors.  Senior Ryan Jackson finished 23rd.  The men scored 58 points, fourth-most in the field.

Senior Anne Siri Lervik finished 11th and missed an All-America honor by less than a second.  Freshman Anna-Maria Dietze finished 19th and junior Hedda Baangman 21st.  The women scored 42 points, seventh-most in the field.
