Colorado Prepped For Pac-12 Play

March 04, 2020 | Tennis

Open weekend with pair of ranked matches

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's tennis team enters Pac-12 conference play Friday at 1:30 p.m. MT with a match against No.39 Washington State in Pullman, followed by a trip to Seattle to take on No.30-ranked Washington Sunday at 11 a.m.

The Buffaloes (8-4) are currently eighth in the Pac-12 in winning percentage heading into opening weekend. Both Washington squads are 9-3 and ranked in the top-40 in the nation. The Cougars are led by the 46th-ranked individual in the country, Michaela Bayerlova, while the Huskies have the 75th-ranked individual in Vanessa Wong. Wong is also part of the 59th-ranked doubles team with Natsuho Arakawa.

This will be a good matchup for Colorado as the team upset Washington State last season for its first ranked win under head coach Danielle Steinberg. Bayerlova and Sara Nayar matched up twice last year, with Nayar taking the first round when Bayerlova was ranked 38th in the nation. The two had a rematch in the Pac-12 tournament, but the match went unfinished with Baylerlova up after a first set victory.

The Buffs are coming off a strong win against Minnesota where Sophia Derivan picked up her 10th dual win. Monica Malinen also moved to 5-5 in the No.1 singles matches while Sara Nayar picked up her second individual win after coming back from injury.

Doubles will be a big story this weekend as Malinen and Nayar enter ranked 64th in the country. Colorado secured a 4-3 upset last season against Washington State thanks to strong doubles play, The team will hope to repeat before heading to Washington and taking on the No.59-ranked duo in the nation.

The Cougars are a formidable opponent after sweeping Denver in California. The team also swept Fresno State, 5-0, but have recent 4-3 losses to both Columbia and San Diego. The Huskies have a 4-3 loss to Florida State, Princeton and a 5-2 loss to Kansas.

Colorado hosts Arizona State Friday, March 13th at 1:30 p.m. to open home conference play. They will follow it up against Arizona Sunday, March 15 at 11 a.m.
