BOULDER -- Stacy Patterson, a defensive tackle for the University of Colorado football program in the mid-1990s, unexpectedly passed away April 11 in Denver.  He was 46.

CU head coach Karl Dorrell recruited Patterson to Colorado when he was an assistant coach under Bill McCartney in CU's 1993 recruiting class.  He prepped at Jones County High School in Macon, Ga.  He lettered at defensive tackle for the 1995-96 seasons.

"Rest in Peace, Stacy," Dorrell said Monday after learning of his passing.  "We are all in shock of the news and one of our great people we know was taken much too soon.  I know that God has a plan for all of us ... and He must have needed you sooner than later.

"I will reminisce about your unwavering love for the CU football program and your teammates you have impacted during your journey.  I will miss your infectious smile, the pranks and humor you enjoyed around your brethren.  You loved your CU brothers like your own family.  We are family ... and you will be missed."

Patterson remained in Colorado after graduating from Colorado and worked in the medical and psychiatric fields.  He was also an assistant football coach at Standley Lake High School in Westminster.

The cause of death is being determined by the coroner and will be released at a later date.  Services are pending, but will likely be limited due to the shelter-in-place order in the state and limited amount of people allowed at public gatherings.
