Top Performances Countdown: O'Loughlin Wins Mark Simpson Invite

April 17, 2020 | Men's Golf

Senior Daniel O'Loughlin tied the best 54-hole score in school history and tied for first at the Mark Simpson Invitational on Oct. 8. That effort earned the No. 11 spot in our countdown of top performances from 2019-20.

O'Loughlin was under-par in all three rounds of CU's home tournament and finished 12-under with a total score of 204. It was a historical finish in a historical win, not just for O'Loughlin, but for the team.

The senior opened play with a 69 in the first round and a 67 in the second round, both played on Monday, Oct. 7. He had a total of 11 birdies and 22 pars with just three bogeys in those two rounds, and was 5-under on both par-5s and par-4s. Following Monday's play, O'Loughlin was sitting tied for fourth place, just three strokes off the lead.

He finished with a 4-under 68 in the final round and birdied the final two holes to pull even with Grand Canyon's Michael Salazar and CSU-Fullerton's Jack Dyer for a three-way tie for first place. O'Loughlin had five birdies and 12 pars in the final round with just one bogey.

"My game was really, really good all three rounds, my long game especially good," O'Loughlin said.  "For the most part, I gave myself a lot of chances, though today, I felt like I didn't give myself that many the first 12 or 13 holes.  I was really pleased with how I finished today, with the three birdies on the last four holes (Nos. 15, 17, 18)."

It wasn't just a big win for O'Loughlin, it was also a big team win for the Buffs as they captured their seventh straight Mark Simpson Invitational trophy. All five of CU's designated scorers finished in the top 20, and it was the first time in 11 years that as many as five Buffs finished under par in a tournament, as well as the first time ever that all five scorers did so. Additionally, head coach Roy Edwards passed the late Mark Simpson for most major tournament wins for a head coach with 17.

As for O'Loughlin, unless he decides to return in 2020-21 with the NCAA eligibility extension for spring sport athletes, he wrapped up his CU career in the pandemic-shortened spring season. For the year, he played 23 rounds with an average score of 71.65 to lead the team in stroke average for the second straight season (also the fifth-best in CU history). His stroke average of 70.43 from the fall season was the best fall score average in school history.

For his career, O'Loughlin had two tournament wins (also capturing the Air Force Miranda Invitational in 2018), seven top-fives and 11 top-10s, and a school-record stroke average of 71.71.
