Top Performances Countdown: Wright And Schwartz Lead Buffs Over No. 13 Dayton

April 23, 2020 | Men's Basketball

It was one of the most memorable wins in CU men's basketball history as D'Shawn Schwartz drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to upset No. 13 Dayton 78-76 in Chicago on Dec. 21. The Flyers did not lose a game after that and finished the season ranked No. 3 in the nation.

To beat a team of that caliber on a neutral floor, you need some big performances. The Buffs got those from McKinley Wright IV and Schwartz as Wright had 29 points and 10 rebounds and Schwartz finished with 20 points, hitting 5-of-7 shots from the outside. Those two efforts earned No. 5 on our countdown of top performances of 2019-20.

By now, we all know how the game played out. Dayton built a 14-point lead in the first half. But CU fought back to lead in the second half behind 16 second-half-points from Wright.

Schwartz, meanwhile, helped the Buffs get back within four at halftime with two 3-pointers late in the first half. In the second half, his triple with 7:51 remaining in regulation gave the team an eight-point lead, its largest of the game before Dayton rallied to force overtime.

In the extra session, it was all Wright and Schwartz as the two combined for 10 of the team's 12 points. Wright scored CU's first basket to tie the score at 68-68, but Schwartz caught fire, burying two 3-pointers and scoring eight total points.

On the game's final possession, Wright found Tyler Bey open on the block, but he was quickly double-teamed and passed out to a wide open Schwartz who sank the game-winning 3-pointer from the right wing as the clock hit 0:00.

Wright's double-double was the sixth of his career and his 29 points were a season high and second-most in his career. For Schwartz, it was his second career 20-point game and he tied a career high with five 3-pointers. It was the first time in the 2019-20 season that the Buffs had two players score at least 20 points in a game.

For the season, Wright went on to earn first-team All-Pac-12 for the second straight year, joining Andre Roberson and Josh Scott as the only other CU players to earn more than one first-team all-conference award since joining the Conference of Champions. He led the team in scoring (14.4) and assists (5.0), and was third on the team in rebounding (5.7). Schwartz averaged 9.8 points and 3.6 rebounds, while making a team-high 51 3-pointers.
