Will walk on in the fall
BOULDER—Colorado women's basketball head coach JR Payne announced the addition of Sophie Gerber, a preferred walk on to the 2020-21 roster on Friday.
Gerber, a 6-foot, from Scottsdale, Ariz., will join the Buffs in the fall after a standout career at Desert Mountain High School.
"Sophie can flat out shoot it," Payne commented. "She is a lefty and was actually able to come to some of our games at the end of the year in Los Angeles when we were not shooting the ball very well. After every game she kind of had that look in her eye like, 'Coach, it's ok. I'm coming.' She's a great young lady and will be a terrific part of our team."
Gerber averaged 15.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game as a senior last season. She also was strong on defense with 1.4 steals and 1.3 blocks per game. The shooting guard finished the year shooting 46 percent from the field and set a school record with a 41-point game in December.
She helped the Wolves to regional championship her sophomore year and was 5A All-Region in her junior and senior seasons. Gerber wrapped up her high school career as the 5A Region Player of the Year.
Gerber's basketball achievements also include the being the 2019 Hoophall MVP, a gold medal at the 2019 European Maccabi Games in Budapest, Hungary and the 2018 Nike TOC championship.
