Hodgkins Wins Stroke Play Qualifier At 105th CGA Women’s Match Play Championship

July 13, 2020 | Women's Golf

LONGMONT, Colo. — University of Colorado senior Kirsty Hodgkins shot a 65 to record first place in the stroke play qualifier at the 105th CGA Women's Match Play Championship at the 6,399-yard par-72 Saddleback Golf Course on Monday.

"I was really happy for Kirsty today," head coach Anne Kelly said. "She has always been capable of going low and she certainly did today! I know she has been working hard and it was nice to see the work pay off for her in the stroke play round today. She is a good match player competitor and it will be fun for her to play that format this week."

The 7-under round was one of the best this calendar year for the native of Brisbane, Australia. She easily advanced to the match play portion of the championship along with former Buff Erin (Kerr) Houtsma and current teammate Kelsey Webster.

Hodgkins' round included seven birdies and one eagle. She shot a 4-under 32 through the first nine with four birdies. The back nine started with her fifth birdie of the day before she recorded a bogey No. 10, a par-3. But Hodgkins rebounded nicely with an eagle on the next hole. She went on to finish the round with two more birdies, three pars and one bogey for a 3-under 33 on the back nine.

Houtsma finished third with a 1-under 71. She recorded an even 36 through the first nine and was 1-under through the second. She sank four birdies but had three bogeys as well.

Webster had a strong finish, taking 13th overall with a 3-over 75. The front nine was a bit of a challenge as she carded back-to-back bogeys on the second and third holes, but consecutive birdies put her back at even. She made par on the next two holes before another bogey on No. 8. Webster finished the front nine 1-over (37) after making par on No. 9.

The back nine was smooth sailing for the most part as Webster made par on every hole. The one that got her was No. 15, a 410-yard par-4 where she recorded a double-bogey, which put her at 2-over for the back nine and 3-over for the day.

Match play begins Tuesday with the round of 16 and quarterfinal matches. The semi-final matches will take place on Wednesday with the finals being contested Thursday.
