Pursell Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

July 24, 2020 | Football

BOULDER—Junior Colby Pursell is one of 114 players nationally named to the Wuerffel Trophy Watch List, the organization announced Thursday.  The award exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society and inspire greater service in the world.

Pursell has been extremely active in community service while at CU, participating in programs in conjunction with the Global Down Syndrom Foundation and also with Buff Hugs.  Pursell has helped run clinics with the Global Down Syndrom Foundation over the summer the past few years, with the exception of this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  With Buff Hugs, he has visited patients at Children's Hospital Colorado and helped with a craft party the Buffs help there last fall.

On the field, Pursell has started 17 games, the third most among CU returners on offense.  He has twice been named to the NFF/Colorado Chapter All-Academic team.  He started all five games in 2019, missing four games due to illness, and all 12 games as a freshman in 2018 when he earned mention on the NFF/Colorado Chapter All-Colorado team and was a finalist for CU's Freshman of the Year across all sports.

He was honored with the Byron R. White Leadership Award by CU's academic staff in 2018 and also named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team, as well.

The award began in 2005 and is named after Danny Wuerffel, the 1996 Heisman Trophy Winner from Florida, and recent CU watch list members include Sefo Liufau (2016), Derek McCartney (2017) and Nick Fisher (2018).
